Backwaters of Kerala, IndiaMy-Kerala Home> Travel Home > The major backwaters of Kerala are located along the towns such as Kumarakom, Vaikom, Kovalam, Kollam, Kayamkulam, Alleppey and Cochin. The major Backwaters are Vembanattu lake - 52 sq kms., Ashtamudy lake - 200 sq kms., Ernakulam - Vypeen ferry (Cochin port & Harbour), (4) Muhamma - Kumarakom, Vaikom - Thavanakkadavu, and Payyannur - Parassinikkadavu. Normal backwater cruises begin by arriving at the southern end of Kerala namely Trivandrum (Airport) and then travel by road to above locations. Many operators arrange a stay at the Kayamkulam lake overnight in the House Boat. Kayamkulam to Alleppey is another sector for those who want to enjoy more of the backwaters of Kerala. This sector enable you to visit small villages along the river with an overnightstay in the House Boat.
