UDF To Picket Secretariat On Dec 22

AJ: The Opposition UDF will picket the Secretariat on December 22 against the 'failure of the LDF Government to contain price rise of essential commodities,' UDF convener P P Thankachan said. UDF will intensify the protest if the government continues to turn a blind eye to the spurt in the prices'. Stating that the UDF had for long been urging the government to initiate urgent steps to contain the price rise, he said it was quite unfortunate that the Government remained negligent on the issue. Karunakaran Announces His Return

AJ: Veteran politician K.Karunakaran today announced his plans to rejoin the Congress after a three-year-long estrangement with the party, admitting that it was a mistake to leave it.I am returning to my political home as the Congress alone could take the country forward taking all the people together. From now on my energy would be channelised in that direction,Karunakaran said at a convention of his supporters drawn from all parts of the state. He also expressed hope that his son and NCP state unit president K Muralidharan would also follow his father's footsteps and would return back to the party one day. Labels: Politics
KPCC Not Against Karunakaran's Return

AJ: Former Chief Minister and Veteran Leader K.Karunakaran's plans to return to Congress crossed a major hurdle, party's Kerala leadership informing AICC President Sonia Gandhi that it was not opposed to his re-entry. State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala and Leader of Opposition in Assembly Oommen Chandy had a meeting with party chief Sonia Gandhi. We are not against anybody returning to the party. However, a decision in this regard has to be taken by Sonia Gandhi and the Congress high command," Chennithala told reporters after the meeting.
Karunakaran had left the party because of differences with Sonia Gandhi and the central leadership. So a decision on his re-entry has to be taken by the high command, he said, adding any decision in this regard was acceptable to the state unit.
Karunakaran,who left the Congress and formed the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) had later joined the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). He had recently written to Gandhi expressing his desire to return to the party fold. Labels: Politics
Karunakaran - Murali Supporters Clash In Kochi

AJ: Karunakaran and Muraleedharan supporters clashed in kochi. It has been reported that almost fifty persons owing allegiance to Murali, barged into the meet convened by N Venugopal with sharp weapons. They damaged the chairs of the auditorium and destroyed the camera of the media persons present there.
In the scuffle, many persons have been reported injured. The police had to lathicharge them to disperse the agitated mob. Seven NCP activists in connection with clash. Those held are P B Sudhi, Shajan Thattil, K M Madhu, N J Ani, T R Aji,M R Rajeev and Uday Bhaskar. Trouble between the father and son has been brewing ever since the former Congress leader made it clear on Nov 30 that he is returning to the Congress party. Karunakaran defended his son, saying: 'My son is not the type to unleash such violence.'
The clash in Kochi was not between activists but an ideological conflict, said NCP state president K Muraleedharan. Senior Congress leader Rajmohan Unnithan, a former aide of Muraleedharan, said there is no doubt that Muraleedharan was behind the attack. Labels: Politics
Murali not to be with Karunakaran any more

AJ: NCP state president K.Muraleedharan said that he will not be with Karunakaran any more. Talking to reporters after the party convention meet, Murali said that he has recommended to the central leadership to take action against the leader for not attending the meet convened. Karunakaran Friday called a meeting of his supporters and announced he was returning to the Congress and that a formal decision would be announced at a convention next week.
'I only wish that he tells us why he wants to return to the Congress. I am told he has been offered the governor's post or he is to be made a permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee. If this was his aim, why did he make all of us look like fools for three years? I will not be with Karunakaran in his days ahead. Minister's Action Criticised

AJ: Opposition leader Oommen Chandy, flayed the action of two CPI minister's in the LDF cabinet going to a police station to secure the relase of AIYF activists, arrested in connection with an agitation, and wanted the chief minister to oust them from the cabinet. The government should also take legal action against the mnisters for 'forcefully' securing the release of AIFY activists who were arrested in connection with agitation against retail giants, he said. The Ministers C Divakaran and K P Rajendran had committed breach of oath of office and their action amounted to interference in the administration of justice, the incident also proved that the LDF cabinet had lost collective responsibility, Chandy said. AJ: The four parties are those headed by K.M. Mani, R. Balakrishna Pillai, T.M. Jacob and P.C. George which have decided to work together while maintaining their individual identity for the time being. The four leaders have decided to name the new set-up the Confederation of Kerala Congress. The Kerala Congress headed by Mani and the one headed by Pillai are already allies of the UDF, while Jacob's party was an ally till 2004 when it was merged with the Democratic Congress Indira-Karunakaran. P.C George,who was a fellow traveller of the Left, was booted out of the LDF two months back. AJ: The State Human Rights Commission which had registered a suo motu case following the ghastly incident friday, in which an ASI lost his life in the clash between two student unions. BJP seeks removal of Home Minister and DGP
AJ: BJP president P K Krishnadas has asked the government to remove Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and DGP Raman Srivastva. Addressing a press meeting in Kottayam, Krishnadas said Balakrishnan and Srivastava were trying to shield the culprits. They have done a criminal crime and should be prosecuted, he alleged. He said the incidents in the college campus should be investigated by a central probe agency. A march will be taken out to the office of Superintendent of Police on October 29th. Karunakaran may return to the Congress

AJ: Former Kerala Chief Minister K. Karunakaran said in a clear indication that he is willing to return to the Congress Party, he had no qualms to acknowledge the leadership of Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Karunakaran joined the NCP year ago after merging his DIC with it. He floated the DIC in May 2004 after he left the Congress Party along with his son K. Muralidharan. The state Congress leadership had said earlier that the party would be glad to welcome Karunakaran to its fold if he openly acknowledged the leadership of Ms Gandhi.Labels: Politics
ASI killed In Violence at NSS College
AJ: Changanassery: Clashes between SFI and ABVP activists in the aftermath of college union elections took a violent turn at an institute, a policeman trying to control them being killed. Assistant Sub-Inspector Elias (47) was hit by a rod while he was trying to restore peace at NSS College at Changanassery. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and DGP Raman Sreevastava visit the college and asked Inspector General Vincent Paul to submit a preliminary report on the incident immediately. In the search operations held by police recovered armaments from the college campus. The police have also arrested twelve people, among which four are directly involved in the incident said police sources. BJP and UDF had called a hartal in the area in protest against the incident. BJP Reject CM Request To Call Off Hartal

The BJP reiterated that they will not withdraw from the hartal called on November 1st in view of President Pratibha Patil's visit to the state. The hartal was called to protest against the central govenment's neglect of the state and formation of Salem Railway division.Earlier in the day, Achuthanandan had asked the BJP state unit to call off the shutdown considering the President's visit on November 1, the state formation day.
