Lizzie Jacob is new Chief Secretary

Lizzie Jacob has taken over as the new chief secretary of Kerala today. She has replaced John Mathai who retired from the post. She was the former power secretary and also served as Additional Chief Secretary of the state. Lizzie is also the state's second woman elected as the chief secretary.

Roshan Andrews to make Nadodikattu sequel

Young talented director Roshan Andrews is planning to make the fourth edition of the Mohanalal, Sreenivasan starrer Malayalam hit, Nadodikattu. The second and third parts were Pattana Pravesham and Akare Akare Akare. Roshan who made his debut with Udayannanau tharum is currently busy with his forthcoming film, Notebooks a film themed on problems of the youth. The Nadodikattu sequel is planned for 2007 and will focus on the characters of Dasan and Vijayan essayed by Mohanlal and Sreenivasan in the earlier versions.

Ezhuthachan Puraskaram for Kovilan

Renowned Malayalam novelist Kovilan is awarded with the Kerala government's highest literaray honor, Ezhuthachan Puraskaram. The award institited after Ezhuthachan is being presented for his eminent contributions to Malayalam literature. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh was presented by Cultural Affairs Minister at the writer's residence.Besides a momentum and citation will be presented to the writer at a seperate function.

PMs Kerala visit as scheduled

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would continue with his Kerala visit as per the scedule, informed kerala Chief Minister. This comes in spite of the recent life threatning email threats to the PM. Mr Singh is expected to reach Thiruvananthapuram for the Kerala's Golden Jubilee celebrations on November 1st. He would also lay the foundation stone of the International Airport Terminal as planned earlier.

Another version of the sequel of the cop story, Inspector Balram is being planned. Actor Prithviraj is said to play the lead role in the film. Photographer is Renjan Pramod's directorial debut and is based on the story of the Muthanga incident. The film tells the story of a photographer who is assigned on a work among the forests when the riots at the Adivasi tribals takes place. Kannada actress Nityasree pairs opposite Mohanlal in the film. Mohanlal also plays a dual role in the film as a farmer which has been kept as a top secret by the film crew. Azhagappan's cinematography deserves a special mention who captures the nature's beauty with utmost care. But the subject of the film what the director has chosen is what is more disturbing.

Pothen Vava

Joshy's Pothenvava is projected as a family entertainer with pop singer Usha Uthup playing a significant role in the film. However except for the initial hype, there is nothing much new in the plot. IIT satellite campus in Kerala soon

India's premium educational institute IIT, Chennai is said to start a n IIT satellite campus in Kerala. The proposed campus to be housed on 250 acres of land is to be set up at an estimated cost of Rs.800 crore. Kerala CM has informed this in the State Assembly. The place where the campus is to built is yet to be finalised and the Kerala govt has asked the IIT Chennai to start the first batch in the campus by 2007-08 academic year.

Rs 5bn to be raised for Kerala sports

Kerala government has said that it would raise Rs.5 billion for fuds towards development of sports infrastructure in the state. This was informed by the Kerala Sports Minister. As apart of that the govt would be even conducting a super bumber lottery scheme which is expected to collect a sum of Rs 2 bn. The sale of tickets will start from Nov 14th and the final draw will be held early next year. The govt also expect to allocate a substantial sum towards sports and through other resource mobilisation schemes in the 11th five year plan and therby hope to have a corpus fund of Rs.5 billion, said the minister.

International boat show takes off at Kochi

The wide spread viral fever, Chikungunya that affected Kerala state and mainly Allapuzha district is said to be under control, said Kerala's Health Minister. There has been a decline in fresh cases of the epidemic in the region. Meanwhile the government is continuing with its cleanliness and awareness campaign across the State. However the Minister refused to comment further on as to weather the disease has actually attributed to the deaths.

Kerala had made it to the last four in the Semifinals with a 2-1 victory against Karnataka at the Santosh Trophy national football competition. While K S Joby took the first goal, Kerala's win in the match was secured by N P Pradeep's goal and Kerala men showed true brilliance as they had to play the last quarter of an hour with only 10 men. Kerala will be seeking the 6th title victory and will now take on heavy weignts Bengal in the semi finals match on Sunday.

Veteran actress Sreevidya, 53 died of illness at Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday evening. She was battling with cancer for few years. She had portrayed a variety of roles in over 800 films and several television serials, across many South Indian langauages most being in Malayalam. Her first Malayalam film was Chattambikavala opposite actor Sathyan and her most popular films include Apoorva Ragangal, Idvazhiyile Poocha Minda Poocha, Deivathinte Vikrithikal, Adaminte Vaariyellu etc. She was lately seen acting in Malayalam TV serial Amma Thampuratti but the seriel was wound up by director Sreekumuran Thampi as she could not continue due to illness.

Thalassery-Mysore rail link sought

Minister for State law and parliamentary affairs has assured that the Kerala government would exert pressure on the Center government for Kerala's long time demand for the Thalassery-Mysore railway line. There has been several surveys conducted on the proposed railway line but so far nothing has been materialised.The Minister also informed that the govt had met with the Union Railways Minister and had made a request for revival of the proposed railway link connecting the Malabar region.

Tsunami: Rs 40 cr for Arattupuzha

Arattupuzha of Allapuzha district has been allocated Rs 40 crore grant towards Tsunami rehabilitation in the region. The state has been approved a total of Rs 1441.75cr by the Center towards the rehabilitation activities, informed Kerala's Revenue Minister. Allapuzha district was the worst hit by the killer waves and govt is undertaking works to complete the reconstruction of houses in the district which has a target of 848 destructed houses.

NCP leader Sharad Pawar's party and Karunakaran's DIC party will be holding a merger meeting on Nov 12th on which eventually the merger announcements of the two parties are to be made. Mathai Chacko MLA passes away

CPI(M) leader and MLA Mathai Chacko, passed away on Friday. He was 47. He was ailing for a while and was was hospitalised undergoing treatment for lukemia. Chacko who came to politics as a prominent student leader, was elected to the State Assembly from the Thiruvampadi constituency of Kozhikode district. The swearing-in ceremony of Mr. Chacko was even held at his hospital room because of his ill health. His last rituals will be held on Saturday.

Ponkala fest set to make it to Guinness Book

The famous Attukal Ponkala, the annual festival of Attukal Bhagavathi temple in Thiruvananthapuram is all set to make its entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. The celebration which draws millions of crowd every year to perform the traditional ritual of Ponkala cooking is getting mentioned in the Guinness book in the category of events attended by more than a million people. The Guinness book authorities had already contacted the temple officials on this regard. The Guinness indicates that about 15 lakh attended the 1997 festival and over 12 lakh in the last year.

State wide sanitaion drive to fight diseases

Students, teachers are asked to volunteer themselves for the campaign which will comprise of house-to-house awareness and similar cleanliness activities.

Kayamkulam project: Qatar to hold 40pc stake

Power major, National Thermal Power Corp. Ltd.(NTPC) had decided to give a 40 percent stake to the Qatar investment body, QIB in Kerala's gas fuelled Kayamkulam power project. Petronet LNG Ltd has 10 percent stake in the project while the remaining 50 percent will be held by NPTC itself. NTPC runs a 350-megawatt power plant in Kerala and as a part of its expansion plans wants to expand it to a 1,950-megawatt unit by 2010-11.

Chikungunya declared an epidemic

The government has declared the viral fever disease, chikungunya an epidemic. "This is the epidemic outbreak of chikungunya and the fever incidence is very high. We have to take effective preventive measures in order to contain the epidemic outbreak", stated expert from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program. The disease is visiting Kerala after 32 years and this time around the disease is caused by a more stronger African strain of virus which is said to have a higher transmissibility and higher infection rate in humans.

The Kerala government has decided to make Malayalam compulsory in all schools at the primary level till Std 4th from the next academic year. The order has been issued in view with the State's 50th year of formation celebrations. The State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) had been asked to prepare the syllabus and study material accordingly to instill Malayalam learning in schools. Earlier Malayalam writers and literary personalities has come up forward with a similar demand so as to popularise the use of Malayalam language in the State.

Marad: Former CM blames it on CPI-M

Referring to the riots involved with the Marad incident, Former Kerala CM A K Antony has blamed it on CPI-M responsible for creating communal violence in the region. He pointed out that the judicial probe conducted by the Commission has clearly revealed that the CPI-M was not in interests of efforts for peaceful settlement of the issues and wanted to make use of the situation to create communal divide among the people. WHO team visits chikungunya affected areas

A team of experts including WHO members visited the State's Chikungunya affected areas. The team which also comprise of experts from National Institute of Virology and National Institute of Communicable Diseases is assessing on the situation and is working with the Government and the district health administration in taking steps to prevent the spread of the disease. Meanwhile the number of casualties affected by the disease is rising with more cases reported from Palakkad, Eranakulam, Kottayam districts.

Noted Malayalam director I V Sasi is roping in Suresh Gopi lately for his forthcoming film which is said to be named as Amaran. This is Sasi's new venture after Balram Vs Taradas. I V Sasi is also teaming up with writer A K Sajan who will pen the script for the new film. The film is produced under the banner of Shreechakra Private Limited.The film will start rolling in November.

Govt take steps to contain chikagunya fever

Kerala government has called upon the Center govt's support for dealing with the increasing incidence of chikungunya viral fever in the State. Kerala Chief Minister has said that the govt was taking necessary steps to contain the spread of the disease. Awareness programms to educate the public and treatment facilities were being monitored in the the district levels. Central team is also coming to the State to collect blood samples of the patients and to conduct field studies and access on the situation.

After Rajasenan's film with Madhuchandralekha, the director brings in another family entertainer with Jauaram in the lead. Jayaram plays a drama artist in the film who runs a drama troop. Karthika and Laxmi Goplaswami are the female lead.

Vijayadasami day is considered as the most auspicious day to initiate children into writing their first alphabets.Temples and religious institutions witnessed hectic rush where children were brought to scholars or literary personalities who held their hands making them write the first letters on sand or in a tray of rice grains.Eminent personalities like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Sreekumaran Thampi, film actor Murali, renowned poet and writer O.N.V. Kurup were few among who initiated children to letters this year. Though a Hindu tradition recently it is being celebrated by people across all castes and religions.

Indrajit plays the lead character of Shivan in the film while Prithvi dons the role od a police officer in the film. Meera Vasudev plays the female lead.The other casts are Salim kumar, Mala Aravind etc.Reji Nair pens the story.
