Two killed, many injured in Malappuram

AJ: Two brothers were died in a clash that broke out between two groups at the Juma Masjid Kottakkal in Malappuram. The dead have been identified as Abu and Abdu, natives of Kottakkal. Fourteen persons sustained injuries. A dispute over the administration of the mosque ended in a clash. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital and Kozhikode Medical College.
Catholic schools and collegs shut in state
AJ: The attack on Christians and their institutions in parts of Orissa, thousands of Catholic schools are shut across the state as part of the countrywide protest over the issue. All Christian denominations pledged solidarity with the Catholic church by wearing black badges, passing resolutions condemning the attack on the community and holding prayer meetings in their institutions. Christians from at least 30 churches across the country participated in the rally in Delhi and chanted slogans against the human rights violation in Orissa.
Kerala to set up electronic industrial park

AJ: Industries'Minister Elamaran Kareem said the government proposed to set up an electronic industrial park at Caivallige in Kasargod district. He said that Kinfra was in the process of acquiring about 500 acres of land for the proposed project. The minister said the State government would announce the package soon. The government was finalising the package and it would be in tune with the packages announced by other States for the electronics industry.
Moahmmed committe modified fee structure

AJ: The P A Moahmmed committe announced the modified fee structure for six self-financing medical colleges which entered into an agreement with the Kerala Government. The new fees would range from Rs 4.37 lakh to Rs 4.71 lakh for seats under the management quota. For the Government Quota, it would be Rs 45,000. Under the agreement, the mangements would surrender 50 per cent of the seats to the government.
CBI made false statement, says HC
AJ: The Kerala High Court says that the CBI, had made false statement regarding the number of CDs on the narco-analysis test was wrongreceipt of CDs from the Forensic Science laboratory Bangalore,on Sister Abhaya murder case. The court had directed CBI DySP R K Aggarwal to appear before the court in view of certain subsequent developments. The CBI had earlier informed the court that though they had obtained 'sufficient clues' regarding the accused in the case. The court asked social activist Joemon Puthenpurackal to keep off the case.
Prosecution General resigns

AJ: Prosecution Director General P G Thampy resigned from his post. Thampy is a senior advocate of Kerala High Court and chairman of the Bar Council of Kerala. His resignation was due to personal reasons. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said not to sensationalize his resignation. If the government were dissatisfied over his work then they would have removed him from the post earlier itself.
Anthurium festival starts on Sept. six
AJ: Five day International Festival for anthurium flowers exhibition starts on Sept.6 at Kochi. The exhibition organised by the Ernakulam District Agri Horti Cultural Society. The exhibition aimed to promote commercial cultivation of anthurium in Kerala and create National and International market for flowers. Over 20,000 varieties of flowers will be exhibited. Flowers from Israel, Italy and Holland would participate in the exhibition.
NCP launched new TV channel

AJ: The Nationalist Congress Party president K. Muraleedharan announced the launch of a new television channel named Janapriya Communications. Inaugurating prop. channel's office in Thiruvananthapuram, Muraleedharan said 49 percent of the share will be collected from the public, and he distributed share certificates of the channel to the public.
Normal life affected due to strike in the state
AJ: Normal life affected in the state as the general strike, called by Left trade unions against UPA's economic policies. The strike was peaceful and no incident reported from any part of the state. The KSRTC not operate its services. Railway services were severely hit as the protesters picketed trains in various parts of the state. The strike did not affect flight services from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram Airports and IT sector. Shops and commercial establishments across the state did not open. Educational institutions were also closed. Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said the government giving 'full protection' during the strike.

AJ: Opposition UDF demands withdrawal of power charge hike. Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said that the state government should withdraw the move to increase charges. He said that the government is looting the people by saying that this was due to failure of monsoon. He demanded that, the government should release a grant to the Board to compensate the loss as the previous UDF government had done.
HAL to set up its facility in Kasaragod
AJ: Defence Minister A K Atony announced that the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will set up its unit in Kasaragod. The initial expenditure of Rs 66.31 crore. The facility would be ready to start operation within 15 months. The project would be set up on 200 acres at Seethamkuly, near Kumbala, in Kasaragod. The state government had provided the land on 99 years lease to HAL. Antony said that, this division had major plans for upgradation of existing versions and design of newer versions of these systems for Jaguar, MMRCA, LCH and many other newer aircraft expected to be inducted into the service in the coming years. On August 23rd AK Atony would lay the foundation stone for the project.
Govt. to spend Rs.2.5 bn for tourism

AJ: Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that the government would spend Rs.2.5 billion for tourism development this year. The last year, tourist arrival in the state went up by 20 percent compared to the previous year. Kodiyeri says that the government is promoting 'responsible tourism' in the state. The minister inagurate the Kerala State Institute of Hospitality Management, first of its kind in the Malabar region.
Govt. to acquire land for IIST

AJ: Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said the government will acquire 40 acre of land for the setting up of IIST. The land will be acquired at Karippur Village in Nedumangad Taluk in the district.He said that the orders were issued for giving reasonable price for the land as recommended by the SLP Committee. The CM said that the government would honour shooter Abhinav Bindra, by awarding him a Gold Medal and Rs five lakh to his Coach Sunny Thomas.
CM gets death threat via e-mail
AJ: The official website of DGP received an e-mail stating that the chief minister will be killed while attending the Independence Day parade. DGP informed the chief minister and the home minister and a decision was taken to tight security. The message was received from Dimapur in Nagaland and efforts are being taken by the Nagaland police to trace the person.
Crime Branch enquiry on Nun's death

AJ: DGP Raman Sreevastava ordered a crime branch enquiry into the Sister Anupa's death. Sister Anupa Mary's body was found hanging from the ceiling fan of a room in St Mary's convent at Kollam on monday. Mary's father Pappachan, who had alleged that his daughter was harassed by a senior nun in the convent. He met Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, seeking a detailed probe into the incident. The CM assured him that the government would take necessary steps in the case. Meanwhile, the Kollam diocese also ordered an "in house enquiry" into the incident.

AJ: Sports Minister M Vijayakumar gets clearance for Beijing trip. The Sports Minister's office received a communication clearing his trip from Prime Minister's Office. Yesterday External Affairs Ministry's denial of permission to him for visiting Beijing. Union Minister E Ahamed said denying permission to Sports Minister M Vijaya Kumar from visiting Beijing, was not a political revenge. Those sent to Beijing were selected by the Olympics Committee and the other legal formalities were all done by the centre. He said that, viewing everything on political grounds is not correct.
Defence Ministry given green signal for Vizhinjam port

AJ: Defence Ministry had given the green signal for the proposed croresVizhinjam Deep sea Transshipment Terminal. Defence Minister A K Antony handed a letter to the state government approving the deal along with two conditions forwarded by the centre. The Defence Ministry's conditions are, the Naval vessels should be berthed at the port and a Naval representative be on the Vizhinjam Port Board. A major advantage of Vizhinjam port will be that with a natural depth of 24 metres - among the deepest in the world - it would not require any dredging. Its other advantage is that it lies very close to a busy international shipping route.
No talks held with NCP: say Chennithala
AJ: KPCC President Ramesh Chennithala said, no talks have been held with the NCP to admit it into the UDF. There was no need for the UDF to take into its fold parties that have been rejected by LDF. He said there was no pressure on the UDF to accommodate all allies of the Congress in the UPA government. Political alliances in States could be different from those at the national level. Meanwile senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran said it was his wish that the NCP should join Congress. He said 'I feel if the NCP joins the UDF, it will be good for the UDF'.
HC cancelled entrance test by college consortium
AJ: The Kerala High Court cancelled the entrance test conducted by six self-financing medical colleges on last month. The six colleges had entered into an agreement with the state government on seat sharing and fees structure. The order is issued by Justice S Sirijagan on a petition by a student Fathima Haseena. Education Minister M A Baby said the necessary steps will be taken after studying the details of the court verdict.
ESI starts nursing colleges

AJ: Labour Minister P K Gurudasan said ESI Corporation would start four nursing colleges in the state. The colleges would come up in at Eazhukon, Udyagamandl, Peroorkada and Farooke. The minister said that the corporation had decided to permit the employees under ESI to get treatment in private hospitals and pay the treatment expenses directly to the hospitals.
Petrol pumps remain closed on Sundays
AJ: The All Kerala Federation of Petroleum Dealers announced that Petrol pumps in Kerala will remain closed on Sundays with effect from August 18. Federation President M S Mathew says the other days the pumps has been open from 6am and close to 8pm. The current timings is 6am to 10pm. Meanwhile Civil supplies minister C.Divakaran said that government will provide all security to those petrol pumps which will remain opened on Sunday. The bus and lorry operators have opposed the decision.
UDF to launch vehicle campaign

AJ: Ernakulam DCC president K P Dhanapalan, said UDF will launch a vehicle campaign rally in Ernakulam district from August 3 to 8. He said the campaign was aimed at creating awareness among the people on the various welfare projects implemented by the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre.KPCC President Ramesh Chennithala will inaugurate the programme on tommorrow. Union minister Oscar Fernandes, Congress leader Veerappa Moily and Janardhana Poojari are also take part in the campaign.
