A German scientist turned Indian dancer
Kochi, Jan 28 (ANI): Impressed by the classical splendour of Bharatnatyam, Simone Brero, a German scientist, has devoted her life to this dance form by running a school in Munich to teach Indian dance.
In 1997 after watching a Bharatnatyam performance that caught her imagination to extent that she decided to master the beautiful dance form. Then she began her hunt for an appropriate teacher who could impart the nuances of this unique dance form, which involves both mind as well as the body.
"Actually it was going hand in hand because I was learning the dance while I was studying for my biotechnology studies and I think dance was always in me and it just came out," she said. She chose to learn this scintillating art form under the tutelage of Shyamala, a well known Bharata Natyam exponent and founder of the Dharani School of Performing Arts in India.
"That was my turning point into the world of dance and music from a scientist. But I had to return to Germany soon as I was pursuing my studies in biology," she added. Simone has been coming to India regularly since 2000 to learn dance at the Dharani School. To improve her abhinaya, which means meaningful gestures in dance, she took lessons from Padma Bhushan awardee Kalanidhi Narayanan. After finishing her post-graduation in molecular cytogenetics in 2003, Simone returned to India for a long-term stay and had her arangetram (first performance on stage).
The same year she started her dance school in Munich. Today, she has 70 students. Apart from Bharatnatyam, she also teaches the Punjabi folk dance form Bhangra. (ANI)

Kochi Port to host Yachting Volvo Ocean Race
Saturday, 19 January, 2008
Kochi, Jan 19 (ANI): Kochi port in Kerala has been confirmed as the second stopover for the Yachting Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09.
It is for the first time that India would be hosting such a prestigious sailing event. The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the world's most demanding and daring team sporting events, having seven yachts and featuring 11 ocean legs, including seven inshore races and shorter stopovers.
The race is scheduled to start in Alicante, Spain in October 2008. It will cover a total of 39,325 nautical miles and touch 12 ports.
Besides Kochi, other stopover ports include Cape Town, Singapore, Qingdao, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg and Stockholm before coming to an end at St. Petersburg, Russia, in July 2009.
An MoU to the effect was signed by Volvo Ocean Race Director Andy Hindley and Cochin Port Trust Chairman N. Ramachandran in the presence of Kerala Minister for Home, Vigilance and Tourism, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, here on Friday.
"We are satisfied with the infrastructure we have found here. We need to build on learning and understanding process. We need not have actually come here if the infrastructure was not available," said Hindley.
Authorities expect that the event, to be staged in Kochi from December 3-10, would give a major boost to tourism in the state.
"I am seeing Volvo Ocean Race as a great vehicle for Kerala tourism to reach across to a segment, which is our preferred segment and to whom we have not ever addressed in ad campaigns. The advantage which Kerala will get is not merely through number of people who will come to see the event, but it is the spin offs that the event will generate in terms of more of media interest and more operators organising packages," said V. Venu, state's tourism secretary. (ANI) --MP
Kerala facing milk shortage
As milk production in the State keep falling, Kerala is faced with severe crisis in procuring enough milk to meet the daily demands in the State. The shortage in turn has put Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) to depend on neighbouring states like Karnataka to meet the demands. Inorder to meet the shortage Milma suffered a loss of Rs.170 million in the last financial year. "We have held discussions with the government on hiking milk prices. The government is against it. Our position is that if there is no price hike the government should bear the loss suffered by Milma on milk procurement from Karnataka," says an official. The fall in the domestic milk production is attributed to decline in dairy farming due to high input cost and less margin in profits. --MP

Saturday, 5 January, 2008
New Delhi, Jan.4 (ANI): "We want to engage the (Indian) diaspora at every level through Pravasi Bharatiya Divas," stated Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs.
The 6th PBD will focus on development of the common man and rural women. The Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, will inaugurate the convention, and President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will deliver the valedictory address and confer the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award. Mauritius Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam will be the chief guest.

Education and healthcare are major agendas of the Government, especially for rural areas, Ravi said.

Other issues that will be addressed during the conference are women empowerment through microfinance and child welfare. Investments and business engagement sessions are also part of the program. As the issues of overseas Indians differ from region to region, working sessions for Gulf, Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe, and Americas will be held.
Ravi also stressed that the problems of women's marriages to NRIs will be addressed. Chief Ministers of five states have confirmed participation so that they can present their development opportunities to NRIs.
"I believe this PBD will give NRIs the opportunity to become a partner and participate for rural areas in India," he concluded.
