Pazhassi Raja in the making Wednesday, February 28, 2007 | MP
A big budget Malayalam film which will tell the classic tale of hero Pazhassi Raja is in the making. The film will also bring in the super trio Hariharan, M.T. Vasudevan Nair and Mammootty together agin after a gap of 18 years. The film will be similar in lines with their earlier epic film Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. The shooting of the Pazhassi Raja is expected to begin shortly in Palakkad. Earlier a film themed on the hero was made in the 60's by the same name. But Hariharan assures that his film is quite different. Apart from Mammootty in the title role, Manoj K Jayan, Tamil actor Sharath Kumar, Sneha, Padmapriya etc are said to be in the cast.

Popular Tamil actress Pooja of Pattiyal fame is making her debut in Malayalam with the M A Venu's upcoming film, Panthayakozhi. The film produced by Lal Creations who have made many a biggies is roping in young actor Naren (also known as Sunil) as the hero of the film. It would be interesting to see the young talents together under the big banner and hope would bring in a new trend to Malayalam cinema which is otherwise popularised by the superstar coverage.

In wake of the recent Supreme Court order setting aside the Narendran Commission report, a three member team headed by former Kerala HC judge Justice Rajendrababu has been set up by the Satte government for identifying the creamy layer criteria for reservation in jobs and admissions. The Two other members on the commission will be chosen later, informed Kerala CM. The Chief Minister also announced that the State Government would file a review petition before the Court seeking clarifications on certain aspects of the judgment on this regard.

The country's airliner Indian(formerly Indian Airlines) has introduced a new 'i Check-in' service that will allow passengers holding e-tickets to check-in from the comfort of their home or office. This online check-in facility is made available to those domestic travellers who are starting their journey from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The passengers are presented with a simple user-friendly check-in option on the internet site of the airlines where they need to enter basic booking details and get the boarding pass on the desktop, therby helping the passengers with hassle free and time saving check in. With the printed boarding pass, the passengers can come to the domestic terminal 30 minutes before the departure of the flight for security checks and to complete other facilities.
Kerala seek South West railway zone Tuesday, February 27, 2007 | MP
Kerala government is making its demand for a new South-West railway zone and has sought Center's intervention for its consideration for the proposal. The new demand would bring in under cover the Palakkad, Thiruvananthapuram, Madurai divisions, the proposed Salem division and parts of Konkan Railway. The proposal on this regard was submitted to The Prime Minister, informed Kerala Law Minister who is also in charge of Railways. Though the Rail budget is being welcomed by the State, the Minister maintained that there were many other long pending demands from the State that were to be met.

Vinodayatra is the name of the Satyan Anthikkad's forthcoming film with Dileep, Meera Jasmine in the leads. Besides Meera another new face is likely to be introduced as the female lead in the film. The others in the cast includes Innocent, Mukesh, Murali, KPAC Lalitha, Nedumudi Venu, Vijayaraghavan,Parvathy of Notebook fame etc. M M Hamza produces the film. Popular musician Ilayaraja scores the music for the film. Vayalar Sarathchandra Varma pens the lines for the 3 songs in the film. The film which already started with its shooting is headed for a Vishu release.

Director Joshy is set for his next film with Dilip which is expected to start with its shooting in the beginning of March. The duo had earlier had worked together for Runway, Lion etc. The new film is being produced by Alvin Antony under the banner of Ananya Film Company. Popular script writers Udayakrishna-Siby K Thomas team are doing the script for the film. The film is projected as an action oriented entertainer and is said to have all the ingredients of a masala film much to the taste of Dilip fans.

A final decision on the long pending Smart City deal in Kochi is expected shortly. A final verdict on the Rs.15 billion Dubai Internet City proposed Smart City project at Kochi is likely to be reached on Tuesday, informed Kerala Chief Minister Achuthanandan. The government and the DIC promoters are on their final rounds of talks and a clearer picture will emerge in one of theses days. Assuring that the govt was closer to clinch on the deal the CM said: 'Almost all the issues have been sorted out and we have told them that we would like to announce the decision before the assembly session starts March 2.'

Kerala has finally got something to cheer this time with this year's Union Railway budget. What has come in Kerala's w3ay is the Union Railway Minister's announcement of a joint venture company with Steel Industries Kerala Ltd in Alleppey, a state public sector undertaking, to manufacture passenger coaches. Besides Kerala is also getting Garib Rath,' a fully air conditioned train which will operate between Thiruvananthapuram and Mumbai twice a week. The frequency of three long distance trains has been increased and more railway tracks included for doubling and electrification. Welcoming the Rail budget, Kerala's Railways Minister has said: 'Compared to earlier railway budgets, Kerala appears to have got a better deal this time. We have got a wagon- manufacturing unit. It is a great boon.'

Ahead of the upcoming World Cup tour Indian cricket team coach Greg Chappell seems to be taking a break off in the God's Own Country. Chappell and his wife on a leisure trip were in a lake-resort at Alleppey holidaying at the house boats among the serene and scenic backwater lakes of Kerala. However the Indian coach's trip has brought trouble to the house boat's owner as the cruise owner has not informed the police as to whom he was hosting in his houseboat. Chappell being a foreign national and falls under high security cover, his visit without proper security is seen as a security lapse.

The Mumbai based retailer is set to make investments estimated up to Rs1,000 crore in Kerala in the next financial year and will open 12 new stores in nine more cities in the Kerala. National award winning actress Shobhana is making a comeback to acting in Malayalam films. She is reportedly said to have agreed to act in few upcoming Malluwood films. This includes Sreenivasan film, Kathaparayumbol which features Mammootty, Mukesh, Sreenivasan in the lead. This mutifaceted actress is also said to be making a leading appearance in the other Mammootty film, Ore Kadal directed by Shyamaprasad. Ore Kadal will also have Meera Jasmine in the female lead. This leading actress who made her debut with the Balachandra Menon film 'April 18' has been away from films for quite a while with her focus now being on classical dancing after starting a school for Bharatanatyam in Chennai.

Mayavi directed by Shafi proves out to be a complete entertainer. The movie tells the story of a one time jailer who returns to his native and turns out a hero among the common people. He is fondly known as Mayavi who is invisible to his enemies but fights against injustice in his own strange ways. The film has Mammootty once again back in his typical superstar status offering lots of action, punchy dialogues, emotions and fun treat for his fans. Gopika does her part well. So is Manoj K Jayan, Salim Kumar etc. The narration of the story is also interesting. The film excels in the technical dept too with excellent camerawork and cinematography. Songs are not bad either. Altogether an enjoyable film which is already making waves among the cinebuffers and has become an instant superhit!

Pattanathil Bootham is the tentative name of Johnny Antony's next Malayalam flick with Mammootty. The filmmaker who made a good commercial hit, Thuruppugulan with Mammootty is back on with another project which is said to be a whole some entertainer. The new film will have Mammootty playing a character of a bhootam, a friendly ghost of children. Sibi K.Thomas-Uday Krishna team who scripted for Johny Antony's Inspector Garud are the scriptwriters for this movie too.

Despite differences over accepting Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan, the Kerala's LDF government has finally given its nod for the agreement of the loan for for urban development in the state. While in opposition, the same LDF allies who had protested against the issue has interestingly taken a reverse stance on the issue now. 'Yes, we opposed to it but now changes have been made on the conditionalities,' said LDF convenor justifying his stance. Meanwhile opposition leader Chandy welcomed the decision on the ADB loan and said that the UDF was always of the firm opinion that the ADB loan is necessary for the development of basic infrastructure of the five Corporations.

With the opening up of the seventh building, 'Tejaswini' at the Technopark campus in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's Information Technology park has emerged as the largest IT park in the country. With the addition of the new building that is housed at 8.50 lakh sq. ft. facility, the IT park now adds upto a total built-up area of 2.2 million sq ft of commercial space and has around 120 IT firms. Speaking at the inaugural function Keralal CM, said that his government would take all efforts to improve infrastructure facilities and provide maximum support for the growth of the IT industry.

Kerala Chief Minister Achuthanandan has ordered judicial investigation into the Sunday's boat tragedy that took place at Thattakedu in Eranakulam dist killing over many an innocent lives. The CM who visited Elavoor to pay the last respects to the deceased announced the cabinet's decision to conduct a judicial probe into the incident happenings. On the occassion he also announced a fund of Rs 200,000 each to the families of the victims. The tragedy has thrown more light on the safety norms for boats plying on state's vast water bodies.

Suresh had done many a films of similar genre like Eklavyan, Commissioner, Bharatchandran IP etc is wearing the khaki uniform again in the new movie for enacting the role of another character by the name Appan Menon in the film. Boat carrying schoolkids capsizes in Kochi Wednesday, February 21, 2007 | MP
Atleast 23 pople mostly children below the age of 10 died as a boat carrying school kids capsized in the Periyar river in Ernakulam district on Tuesday. The boat trip was as a part of a school excursion from the Elavoor School near Angamaly which had gone to Thattekkad bird sanctuary. A total of 103 students and staff where on 2 boats when one of the boat capsized at around 6 pm. trip when one of Elavoor School near Angamaly had when one of the three hired boats capsized at around 6 pm. Over load and poor condition of the boat is cited as the reason for the boat tragedy.

Filmmaker Shaji Kailas is making a movie titled Time, with Malayalam action star Suresh Gopi in the lead. The duo's last film together was Chintamani Kolacase. The director is introducing a new face to Malayalam, Vimala Raman as the heroine of the film. Vimala though new to Malayalam is the former Miss India Australia and popular to the Tamil industry with her film Poi. The other female lead is Padmapriya. Saikumar, Manoj K Jayan, Siddique etc are in the cast. Script by Rajesh Jayaraman. Alex Paul composes music for Vayalar Shart Chhandra Varma's lines. The film has started with its shooting at Karakkudi in Tamilnadu. Bhagyachitra will bring the film to the theaters.

In the wake of opposition leader Oommen Chandy demanding action against CPI-M leader Pinarayi Vijayan for being held with possession of bullets in baggage, Kerala's Home Minister has ruled out any such registration of case against Vijayan. 'No case can be registered against Vijayan as demanded by Chandy under the Arms Act,' maintained the Minister. The communist leader who was bound to Delhi was held by security personnels at the Chennai airport for keeping bullets in his baggage, but was later left off after producing a faxed copy of his rifle license.

Sathyan Anthikad's next venture yet to be titled has already started with its shooting. The film has Dileep and Meera Jasmine playing the lead roles. After Achuvinte Amma and Rasathanthram, its Satyan's third consecutive film with Meera playing the female lead. But its the first time Dileep is being roped in for a Satyan film. Mullaperiyar: Govt to file details before SC Monday, February 19, 2007 | MP
In view with the security concerns surrounding the Mullaperiyar dam issue, the Kerala Government would file a detailed written statement on the Mullapperiyar issue before the Supreme Court shortly. This was informed by the Kerala Minister for Water Resources. The Supreme Court has fixed April 5 to decide on the Tamil Nadu's plea for deployment of CISF personnel in the dam premises. However the parties involved where granted 4 weeks time to file a written submission on the issues. The Minister pointed out that the govt would discuss with the expert committee before finalising on the statement.
Indian launches non stop Kochi-Delhi flight Monday, February 19, 2007 | MP
The country's airliner Indian has started a non stop flight service between Kochi and Delhi sectors from Sunday onwards. This inturn has brought down the travel time between Delhi-Kochi to 3 hrs. The direct flight will operate three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. As an introductory offer, a one way fare of Rs.3,975 including tax) were being offered to the passengers. The flight leaves Delhi at 4.30 p.m. and will reach Kochi at 7.40 p.m. In the return direction the flight will depart from Kochi at 8.20 p.m. and will reach Delhi at 11.30 pm. This is in addition to the daily service, between Delhi-Kochi which operates via Mumbai.

Many a Malayalam films are being remade in Bollywood which inturn had turned out hits. Following footsteps of directors like Priyadarshan, another Malayalam film maker is foraying into the Hindi film industry. Its none other than the popular director T.K. Rajeev Kumar who is making a Hindi film inspired by the 1989 Malalyalam film, Varavelpu which had Mohanalal, Revathy in the lead roles. The film tells the return of a Malayalee from the Gulf and the struggles he goes through when he decides to settle down in his native town and plans to make a living by running a bus. The Hindi version is made with slight changes to woo the audiences there and Govinda, Om Puri, Reema Sen will play the lead roles in the film.
Cola ban: SC refuses interim relief to govt Thursday, February 15, 2007 | MP
The Kerala government which challenged the Kerala High Court's move to lift the ban on Cola and Pepsi recieved a blow with the Supreme Court refusing to to grant any interim relief to the Kerala government. The Court bench also issued notices to Pepsico India Holdings Ltd and Hindustan Coca-Cola Pvt Ltd and asked them to file replies in 4 weeks. A HC bench had on Sept last year held that the state was not empowered to prohibit the manufacture and sale of cola drinks. This came on the wake of the State govt's notification of ban on these soft drinks after laboratory findings revealed that these products contained pesticide residues beyond the permissible limits.

Anwar Rasheed's Mohanlal starrer Chotta Mumbai is expected to reach theaters ahead of Vishu. With the festival season in mind, the film is slated for release on April 7th. The shooting of the film is primely in and around Kochi and has Lal and Bhavana playing the lead roles. As for the Mammootty fans, Big B directed by Amal Neerad is also releasing during the Vishu season. The other films of the season likely are Vinayan's Athisayan, Sathyan film etc.

Kerala's passport offices are setting record with the State issuing the highest number of passports in the country. Reports from external affairs ministry indicate that Kerala's Kozhikode passport office issuing a record 272,804 passports followed by Kochi with 196,097 and Thiruvananthapuram 148,005. On an average the passport recieves about 700 new applications. The processing period for passports had come down to 30 days and officials are working out to bring down the waiting time further. Kerala now operates 4 passport offices with the passport office recent one opened at Malappuram district.

Well known filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan is making a film that will be based on popular writer Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai's works. The renowned director who had made as many as 3 films with Mammootty is for the first time teaming up with Mohanlal for a film. The film will be produced by Doordarshan and will be an adaptation of a series of Thakazi's short stories. Padmapriya, Nanditha Das, Jagathi Sreekumar etc are aslo said to be in the cast.

Kerala is chalking out plans to ensure that the entry of big retailers like Walmart and Reliance into the Kerala markets would not affect the State's agriculture sector. As an initial step the government has announced to provide huge subsidies for undertaking farming of vegetables. "We will begin by giving Rs.15,000 subsidy per hectare to farmers to engage in production of vegetables. We will supply the seeds and enter into an agreement with them to collect the produce. There would be no middlemen so that the farmers get higher prices," informed Agriculture Minister. The agriculture department is also opening up big vegetable markets in major cities in the state in view with the Reliance's plans to set up super markets in the State.

Popular filmmakers Lohitadas, Sibi Malayail who had made some good movies in Malayalam are teaming up together again for another project which is expected to be announced shortly. The duo had worked together for films like Thaniavarthanam, Chengol etc. The two have agreed on working together for the next film which will have Lohi penning the story and script while Sibi Malayil will handle the direction. The two are still working on the cast and other details. With the two talented crew joining hands again, one can hope for another sure shot success from this winning combo.

Mission 90 days is the name of Major Ravi's film that will have Mammootty playing the lead. Major Ravi who made his debut Keeethi Chakra with Mohanlal will now have the other Malayalam superstar in the lead for his next project. The film will be produced by Sasi Ayyanchira under the banner of Uthrattathi Films Pvt Limited. Major Ravi himself pens the script for the film. Other casts include Innocent, Lalu Alex, Sai Kumar, Cochin Haneefa, Bineesh Kodiyeri, Salim Kumar, Babu Raj etc. The film will be themed on army and will start with its shooting in a couple of months.
Govt to act against criminal police Monday, February 12, 2007 | MP
Faced with increasing complaints on Kerala police involved with criminal charges, Kerala government is taking steps to act against those in the police force charged with criminal offences. This was informmed by the Kerala Home Minister who said that those personnels found with criminal backgrounds would be removed from the key posts. "I have also asked that inquiries be made on the present status of these cases and appropriate action taken," he added. Reports by the State Crime Records Bureau has indicated that 850 officials in the police force ranging from deputy superintendent of police to constables had criminal cases charged against them.

Wooed by the tourism oppurtunities in God's own Country, Madhya Pradesh Government is planning to set up a holiday resort in Kerala. Madhya Pradesh Satte which has mass property in the Wayanad District in Kerala worth over Rs.3 billion is planning to convert it to a seven-star holiday resort. The 550 acre land is currently undertaken for coffee plantation and the govt is proposing to convert 35 acres of land as a holiday resort while leaving the remaining land as coffee estate. The facilities for the proposed resort would include a health club and a golf course combined with world class facilities.

The rising prices of essential commodities including vegetables and other food supplies are causing concerns among people across the State. Despite government's assurance to bring down the to bring down the prices of essential commodities by 5 pc, the market rates still escalates with the common men left to suffer. The prices of vegetables, pulses sugar and other essentials has gone up significanlty over the last weeks. Traders claim there is shortage of supplies which has led to the price rise. Many hotel owners are also rising their price in food items owing to the steep price hike in the supplies.

Various film artists from Kerala is to perform a stage show in the Gulf region and European countries over the coming weeks. The upcoming event would have a team of young and veteran film artists including film stars, mimicry artists and the likes. The group will be led by popular actor Jagdeesh and will also include actress Sindhu Menon, veteran film producer Sandhya Menon etc. The 3 week tour begining from Feb end will be first performing in Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and UAE regions in the Middle East. The tour will also extend to Europe with stage shows planned out in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

Shafi's latest flick and Mammootty starrer Mayavi which graced theaters last week is said to be making good opening collections at the theaters. The film which released in over 40 screens marked a 100 pc opening and is running houseful at majority of the centers. After the success of Thommanum Makkalum, Shafi's pairing with Mammotty is expected to recreate magic at the boxoffice and is hopeful of bringing in good returns.

The Brazilian club Sao Paulo Sao Paulo has crushed the Kerala hopes by beating Kerala 3-0 in the Super Soccer Series match at the Nehru Stadium in Kochi. After a goalless first session, Kerala defenders fell easily in the second half with Brazilian captain Marco Antonio making his first goal. Shortly after Da Silva scored the second goal in the 64th and Hernanes completing it with a third goal at the 85th minute defeating Kerala XI 3-0. Sao Paulo will now be winding off its tour with a tie against JCT Phagwara in Delhi on Sunday.

The much talked Rs.15 billion Kochi Smart City project seems to be finally progressing on to the last stages. A team from the Dubai based Dubai Internet City project had recently met Kerala Chief Minister and held talks with the intervention of another Keralite businessman. And as per the reports the Dubai-based NRK is keen to implement the project and is said to have shown interest in investing on the IT infrastructure at Kakkanad in Kochi. According to the latest proposal, Kerala would lease around 210 acres of land to DIC for around Rs.800 million and govt would give no free land for the project.

Malayalam's superstar Mohanlal is on a signing spree. He has newly signed up with G S Vijayan for a film which is to be released later this year. G S Vijayan is known for detective films like Charithram, Coverstory etc. The new film with Lal will be produced by Martin under the banner Emil and Eric Digital Entertainments. Indrajith is directed by Haridas and produced by Kalliyoor Shashi. Kalabhavan Mani plays the central character in the film. Also features Rajan P. Dev, Riyas Khan, Baiju Kurup, Divya Vishwanath, Shalu Menon, Nedumudi Venu, Jagathi etc. The film tells the story of a father portrayed by Rajan P Dev, who brings up his son (Mani) to become a bigger rowdy than himself.Jayan composes the music. Rajeev Aloongal is the lyricist. K.S. Talkies will bring the film to the theaters.
Milk price hiked Wednesday, February 7, 2007 | MP
The price of milk supplies by Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (MILMA) has been hiked by Re 1 per litre. The announcement on the hike came from Kerala CM after a decision taken during today's cabinet meeting. The new price of MILMA milk would now be Rs 16 per litre. He also pointed out that the 75 per cent of the increased amount would be given to dairy farmers. The CM also said that the govt would take necessary steps to bring down the prices of essential commodities which went up significantly.
Thomson to direct film with Dileep in lead Monday, February 5, 2007 | MP
Thomson who had been in the film industry for a while assisting in many films will be donning the directors role for the first time. Dileep is playing the lead role in the film which is to be produced by Alwin Antony under the banner of Ananya Films. Thomson has already been worked as assistant directors to Jose Thomas, Johnny Antony, Balukiriyath and Shafi etc. Thomson is also the younger brother of scriptwriter, Sibi K Thomas of the Sibi-Udayan team and interestingly the duo will pen the script for the film.
Kerala not happy with Cauvery verdict Monday, February 5, 2007 | MP
Kerala today responded to the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's order saying the decision was disappointing and would seek legal steps to ensure the State's interests. "The quantum of water awarded to the state is much less than what we expected. On getting all the details of the Tribunal's order, we would decide on the steps to be taken to defend the state's genuine interests," said Kerala Water Resources Minister. Kerala was awarded only 30 tmc ft of water share, while the State's actual demand was for 99.8 tmc ft.

M. M. Venu is making a new film titled Panthaya Kozhi. Young actor Naren earlier known as Sunil, who had acted in films like Achuvinte Amma, Classmates is going to be the hero in the film. The film will be produced under the big banner of Lal Creations who had delivered many hits. Its the first time Lal creations are experimenting a project with medium actors. Tamil actress Pooja is the heroine. The film will be launched shortly and is expected to reach theaters in April.

With Kerala gaining popularity as a global tourist destination, Kerala tourism is emphasising on responsible tourism to enhance socio-economic growth. Along with increasing foreign revenues, the government is making efforts to ensure that the major part of the revenue reaches the local communities engaged in various sectors of the trade. Besides Kerala will be also hosting an International meet on Responsible Tourism in September 2007. The government would integrate all the 14 district tourism promotion councils in the state including the village councils to ensure that the local population also benefits, said Tourism minister.

The popular actress of the 80's who made her debut in Malayalam with Fazil film, Nokketha Doorathu Kannum Nattu was lastly seen acting in Malayalam in the movie, Vadhu Doctoraanu. Meanwhile she returned to films portraying mother character in Tamil film, M Kumaran s/o Mahalaxmi which went on to become a superhit. Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi has announced the 2006 fellowship awards for three. This includes Kalamandalam Gopi (kathakali), KPAC Khan (drama) and mridangam artist T.V. Gopalakrishnan. The Akademi also announced awards for 19 persons while `Gurupooja' prizes were given to 21 others. The Fellowships carry a cash of Rs 15,000, memento and citation while the awards carried a cash prize of Rs 7,500 while the 'Gurupooja' prizes carry Rs 5000, a citation and plaque.

Kerala is ranked as the topper in providing the elementary eduacation in schools, according to the Education Development Index (EDI) prepared by the National University of Educational Planning and Administration. The EDI index is based on the State's performance both in the primary and upper primary level. While Kerala stands first, Delhi and Tamil Nadu acquires the second and third place among the 35 states in the country. Other top rankers in the list are Pondicherry, Chandigarh, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram and Lakshadweep.

Engg colleges to follow new admission system Thursday, February 1, 2007 | MP
The various engineering colleges under the Kerala Self-Financing Engineering College Managements Association is to follow a new system for admitting students from the next academic year. As per the new system which was adopted after a meeting held by the association, students will be admitted based on their rankings put out by the Commissionerate of Entrance Examinations (CEE) and on the marks obtained in their 10th and 12th examinations. And hence there would be no further tests or interviews for admitting students. Also the fee structure will be based on what the Government spends on each engineering student.
