Vineeth Sreenivas to lend voice for father again Saturday, September 30, 2006 | MP
Young talented singer Vineeth Sreenivasan who had his break with the film, Udayannanu Tharam, with the hit song `Karale, karalinte Karale' is to lend his voice again for his father and actor cum director and script writer Sreenivasan. Vineeth who got to sing for his father in the movie will be doing so again in V M Vinu's upcoming film, Yes your Honor' which has Sreenivasan playing the lead as a junior lawyer. Vayalar Sarat Chandra Varma is the lyricist while Deepak Dev composes the music for the film.
Rising Chikungunya cases in Kerala Saturday, September 30, 2006 | MP
Kerala's Health Minister has said that there had been a rise in the number of Chikungunya cases reported in the State and so far 42 casualities had been claimed affected by the outbreak of the disease. Chikungunya is a kind of viral fever spread by mosquito bites and the majority of the affected cases in Kerala were from Cherthala in Alappuzha district.Over thousands of people had been admitted to various hospitals in and around Alappuzha due to the disease.

Kerala is working out on innovative ideas to woo more tourists to the state and helicopter tourism is one such concept that is being introduced in the State soon. The service is being offered by the Great India Tour Company (GITC), in association with King Rotors and Air Charter Private Ltd and is likely to be launched by October mid. The offer comes in different packages covering sectors like 'Capital by air'- that would cover Thiruvanathapuram, 'Fly the hill' -covering hill spots like Munnar, Thekkady, 'Shoreline Flights'- spotting Kanyakumari, Kochi, 'Backwaters by Air'-covering backwater tours in and around Kumarakom etc. Earlier private charter, Air Deccan too had come up with such services to take tourists to major tourist spots in the State.

A detailed inquiry into the 2003 Marad incidents that led to bloodshed following communal riots in Kozhikode has been sought by the Kerala government. This has been called upon after the Commission findings showed that lapses were found in the then administration under the UDF government. Kerala Home Minister who tabled the report in the Assembly said that a CBI probe was essential to bring out all the aspects of the incident and Centre's support was sought on this regard.

While pushing for a peaceful settlement on the Mullaperiyar dam issues with Tamilnadu through the Prime Minister's intervetion, the Kerala govt is also planning out alternate options in case the effort for an amicable solutions fails. The govt is even thinking of revoking the agreement and Water Resources and Irrigation Minister has said that the government was even ready to bring in such a resolution in the Assembly. The Government is also said to have proposed construction of an alternative dam.

Veteran actress and classical dancer Padmini passed away of cardiac arrest on Sunday night in Chennai. She was 74. A native of Thiruvananthapuram, Padmini is one among the three Travancore sisters. The others being Lalitha and Ragini are also dancers. Also actress Shobhana is Padmini's niece. The legendery actress of yesteryear had acted in many a South Indian and hindi films. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would visit Kerala in November coinciding with this year's Kerala Day celebrations which also marks the State's golden jubilee year, 50 years since its formation. This was informed by the Kerala CM who met with the PM at New Delhi. During his visit Mr Singh is also to lay the foundation stone of the new international terminal for the airport at Thiruvanathapuram. During his meeting with the PM, Kerala CM is said to have discussed issues on the State ban on cola companies, govt's demand for agricultural package etc.

Kerala with its aggressive tourism promotion is attracting a lot of international as well as domestic tourists from all over. This has been marked with a significant rise in its tourist arrivals to the State. The first half of the year has seen a 34% rise in its foreign tourists arrivals while the domestic tourists arrivals also witnessed a 7% rise, said the Kerala Tourism Minister on the sidelines of the press conference to announce the Tourism Mart event that is being held from Sept 28-30. He also added that the tourism growth had generated over Rs 7,000 crore revenues for the State.

The incidence of heart attacks are on a rise in Kerala according to the medical experts. The increasing heart disesease owed to the changing lifestyles, said President of Cardiological Society of India, Kerala Chapter while talking to reporters. When compared to the national avearage of 6-8 %, the prevalence rate in Kerala was between 10 and 12 persons among 100 adults in the cities while it was recorded 6 - 7 in rural areas. A well balanced diet along with regular exercise,smoking absistence etc. are essential for prevention of heart attacks.

The Kerala High court order has lifted the state government's ban on the colas saying that the govt had no jurisdiction to impose a ban on manufacture and sale of their products."This decision can be taken only by the central government. The state government has no right. The order of the state government banning the products were harsh, unreasonable and taken hurriedly," said the bench after hearing the arguments of both sides. However the State govt responded to the HC order saying that the verdict was unfortunate and said that it would move court for an appeal.

The Action Taken Report (ATR) on the findings of the Judicial Commission that inquired the Marad carnage in 2003 that led to the killing of 9 lives in the coastal village of Kozhikode has been approved by the Keralal cabinet.The probe being done by the Joseph commission is to be placed before the Assembly during this ongoing session, said Kerala Chief Minister. But he divulged to disclose any details on the report.Meanwhile not satisfied with the commission's report,the BJP has called for a CBI inquiry into the incident.

While stating this at the State Assembly he said that the govt was expecting to create 1.50 lakh jobs directly in IT and IT enabled service sectors itself. And the Tourism sector is expected to create over 50,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. Private investments at Infopark and Technopark will be entertained to bring in more jobs at the IT sector. He also said that the govt had plans to start a training center at Infopark that is aimed at giving expertise to young skills in their respective fields through industrial training.

The Kerala Forest Department's crocodile breeding center at Neyyar will be named after the popular Australian conservationist, Steve Irwin who recently met with a fatal death after a sting ray attack. The Neyyar Crocodile rearing Center will be dedicated in memory of Irwin for his tremendous contributions to conserve crocodiles and other reptiles. This was informed by the Forset Minister and the govt has also plans to renovate the Center to conserve the wild life species with adding in more facilities.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar has said that a decison on the proposed merger of DIC party with NCP will be made only after discussions with LDF on this regard. Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on his visit to Kerala gave assurance of special agricultural package to the State soon.Kerala has demanded an aid of Rs.56.65-billion that includes a Rs.34.12 billion financial package for drought-affected districts like Palakkad, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Idukki and Alappuzha and Rs.22.53 billion for the entire farm sector in the state. The minister also said that special focus would be given to debt relief, farmer crisis, watershed development, irrigation, horticulture development, rainwater harvesting and animal husbandry etc.

A Supervisory Committee appointed by the govt has declared the entrance test conducted by the Kerala private medical colleges mangement as invalid."The Common Entrance Test for medical course for 2006-07 was not fair and transparent," said the report. The committee headed by Mohammed also recommended the government to take adequate steps to ensure that the medical admission procedure is being conducted beneficial to the students.Meanwhile the Private Medical College Managements Association has denied the report and said that it would seek judicial probe into the issue.

Its the first time Pritvi and Jyothirmayi are pairing on screen. Veteran actor Thilakan, actor Jagdeesh, Sudeesh etc plays key roles in the film. Santhosh Mathai and Biju produces the film under the banner of Cinema movies. M G Rdhakrishnan composes the music to the lines of lyricist Girish Puthenchery. The movie has already been launched and the shooting will soon progress in Thiruvanthapuram and premises.

Kerala cricketer Sreesanth has not been listed in the Champions Trophy Indian team that was announced by the selection committee for the ICC Champions trophy scheduled for Novemember. However the fast bowler has been picked up for the tri series DLF Cup in Malaysia. Selector Kiran More has said that Sreesanth was being temporarly omitted out of the Champions Trophy squad so as to give chance to RP Singh who has been bowling well of late.

Kerala's Water Resources Minister has said that the State was willing to end its disputes with Tamil Nadu over the Mullaperiyar dam issues. The minister said that govt was ready for negotiations on its part for mutual agrrements with Tamil Nadu for amicable settlement on the issues. The govt had even asked for Center's intervention on the matter saying raising dam height was unsafe for the public living in its surrounding disrticts as the dam was located in at a quake sensitive region.

Moonamathoral holds significance as being Malayalam's first digital movie. Directed by V K Prakash, the film tells a horror story of a murder mystery. The film is technically brilliant with cameraman Lokanathan deserving special mention. However the script is the most disappointing factor in the film.Jayaram, Jyothirmai, Samvritha Sunil, Vineeth etc are good in their respective roles. Music director Ouseppachan makes a good comeback with some good melodies in the film.

Young and talented Malayalam filmmaker Blessy is planning out on a couple of films lately. The projects in the making are one with Mamootty in the lead which is expected for release early next year. Howli Potoor is said to produce this film. And the other venture is with actor Dileep. Blessy is yet to come up with the script and other details are awaited soon.

Malayalam filmmaker Rajasenan who had delivered many a family entertainer hits with actor Jayaram is coming together again for another venture. The film is titled Kanaka Simhasanam and will be produced by M.Mani under the banner of Sunitha productions. The duo had lastly worked for Madhuchandralekha. Actress Mamta Mohandaswho paired with Jayaram in Madhuchandralekha is said to be the heroine for this film too. Other female lead is Lakshmi Gopalsamy.Also casts Jagathy, Suraj, Kochu Preman, Bindhu Panikkar etc. The film is said to start rolling in September at Vadakkanchery. The film is slated for Christmas release.
Govt to introduce handloom wear in schools Friday, September 1, 2006 | MP
Kerala govt is planning to introduce handloom uniforms in the government run schools. The proposal being put forward by the govt is intended to give a boost to the sinking handloom industry in the state. The hand spun uniforms woven out of cotton is likely to be introduced in schools once in a week from next year onwards. However no child will be forced to wear the handloom made uniforms, said Industries Minister. If the scheme is succesfully implemented in schools it could employ many rural population in the handloom sector.
