Kerala Govt had said that it was open for talks with private managements to discuss on the ongoing debate on the self financing professional colleges issues. The move comes on the wake of the High Court order allowing the college managements to follow the admission procedures same as of the previous year."We are ready to negotiate with them. We have been holding talks with the managements but at the same time we will move the Supreme Court," said Chief Minister while talking to media.

Govt to protect state interests on Mullaperiyar dam

Kerala's ruling LDF Government has said that the govt would take adequate steps to ensure the state's interests in the Mullaperiyar dam issue. This comes in the wake of the Supreme Court's dismissal of the state's request against increasing the water level at the dam. Kerala Chief Minister claimed that the failure of the previous UDF Government in presenting the State's case effectively on the issue had led to the court order which came against the state's stand. Though the issue for arbitration was raised during the discussion on the Dam Safety Bill the then govt did not take any steps to review on the state's concern,he stated.

Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways has informed in Rajya Sabha that a proposal was being made by the Kerala Government asking for permit for setting up two international sized shipyards. The proposal made under the National Maritime Development Programme has the shipyards to be set up in Poovar near Vizinjham and the other at Mattool.He also informed in RS that Kerala has invited offers for developing a Deepwater International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vizhinijam port.

Kerala is facing a major problem on coastal erosion and the impact of mansoonal waves swallowing up beaches and damaging seashores has become a cause of concern to the scientists as well.The increased sand mining at areas surrounding the beaches over the recent years in the State is seen as a major reason for the severe coastal erosion. After two confirmed cases of Anthrax disease found in cattle at Eranakulam district, Kerala government has taken measures to contain further spread of the disease. The tests conducted on blood samples collected from the infected cows was confirmed positive for Anthrax. The State Animal Husbandry department said that the anthrax spore vaccine was being administered to cattle for immunising the cattle against the disease.

A Keralite lecturer has developed a method like an electronic book reader application that would enable one to download and read the ancient epic, on one's mobile set. He had already downloaded three kandas of the popular literature to his mobile and claims that the entire Ramayana can be downloaded to the mobile which would need just 800 kb of space. This is much less when compared to an MP3 song which would normally take 3-4Mb of space.

HC to hear Govt appeal on July27

The Kerala High Court will hear the Kerala Government's appeal that has been filed against the order of the single judge on the state Self-financing Professional Colleges Act that allowed the private college managements to follow the admission and fee structure of the previous year. The govt was on view that the new law be implemented from the current year and hence has appealed against the High Court order. The HC has said that it would give a final hearing after looking into the various appeals filed by the government and others who protest against the self-financing professional colleges.

Kerala High Court has ordered to follow the same fees and quota structure for admission procedures in the various private professional colleges in the state. With this the management colleges can now go with their selection process of 50% management seats and the fees as recommended by the K.T. Thomas Commission. However the court did not stay the new Act but was on view that since the entrance examination had already been conducted and results published, professional colleges have carried out their affairs in accordance with the Supreme Court verdict even prior to the enactment of the new Act.

Kerala Medical NRI seats turn costly

With the arrival of the new education Bill on the professional colleges, the medical seats reserved for the non-resident Indians(NRI) are becoming too costly. As per the new Bill, 15% of the seats are earmarked for the NRI students which accounts to a total of 113 seats across 8 medical colleges in the State. With the new law in place, the NRI medical seats would now cost an annual fee of Rs. 565,000 which is almost 5 times that of the earlier fees put by the Justice K.T. Thomas commission. This inturn has drawn strong criticism from the Keralites abroad, the NRKs in the Gulf in particular.

The Kerala government defended its stand on imposing 20% tax on luxury products. The higher VAT rates applies to items like aerated drinks, health drinks, paints, house hold products and other luxury items.Kerala's Finance Minister said that the raised VAT rates of 20% instead of the suggested 12.5% was to meet the state's revenue collection targets. Aimed to boost the State's economic growth, Kerala government has plans to start a Public Limited Company on the lines of the Cochin International Airports Ltd(CIAL) for the infrastructure development. The Kerala Government organised Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT) has developed an Open source Office software package for the public that help users to perform text processing and other office functions in the native language. The software product named Kaveri is developed as a part of the Centre for Linguistic Computing Keralam's Mission Malayalam Developmental Programme for Malayalam language computing. This is their second product after Nila. Kaveri is unicode supported five Malayalam fonts including handwritten font and can operate on Unix and Windows based systems. Kaveri also comes packaged with tools like Spell checker for Malayalam and a bi-lingual User Interface and Dictionary,supportive typing system for other Indian languages like Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi, English-Malayalam translation aid, Unicode Malayalam Fonts and Ethnic Screen Savers etc.

Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran has said that the Government was willing to drop the action being taken against the Kannada actress Jaimala provided the actress apologises to the people of Kerala for what she had said that triggered the Sabarimala issue. "If Jaimala is ready to make an apology for what she had said, the government would consider dropping the move to conduct a Crime Branch probe into the issue," said the Minister. This comes after the actress refusing to cooperate with the Devaswom Board investigation officials who had approached Jaimala as a part of the investigation proceedings.

A young Keralite musician,who had played a musical instrument for a long stretch of 51 hours is eyeing an entry into the world's number one record book, Guinness Book of World Records. The 21 year old, Jaison George from Kochi had made this extraordinary attempt by playing keyboard in front of 12 judges of the Guinness Book of World Records. George performed this record event using eight different keyboards. George now hopes to break his own record by wanting to play keyboard for continous 100 hours.

The Suresh Gopi starrer Ashwaroodan fails to make a grade of that expected from an acclaimed filmmaker like Jayaraj. Most of the sequences reminds one of films of the recent past and the film has nothing unique about it. The film is inspired on the issues triggered by the Muthanga incident that led to the killing of local tribal people. Suresh Gopi's acting is average and so is the heroine, Padmapriya as a tribal activist.There is very little the film can do to make an impact on the audiences except for Venugopalan's cameraworks and Saikumar's performance.

Rs 149 cr central aid sought for rain relief

Kerala government has sought Rs 149 cr central aid to meet the life and property damages caused by the heavy rains in the state. A high level team from the Center is expected to visit the affected areas of Kerala to evaluate on the extend of damages and allocate funds. This was informed by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan who met him in New Delhi. The 8 member ministerial delegation headed by the CM has also talked on issues relating to the immigration clearances and concerns on the agriculture sector.

Qatar: Medical certificate to be made compulsory

The Government of Qatar would make it mandatory for expatriate workers applying for entry visa to produce medical certificate from a certified health centre in their respective countries. A set of new directives including guidelines for the functioning of recruiting agencies would also be implemented along with this. According to this, recruitment agencies should have a permanent location and they should not have any other business.

Reconstitution of the Department of Non-Resident Keralites'Affairs (NORKA) with the participation of non-resident Keralites is under the consideration of the Government, said Mr. V. S. Achuthanandan, Chief Minister. Training programme for unskilled overseas job seekers is also under consideration. The Chief Minister said this during his inaugural address of 'Sneha Santhwanam', a programme to provide financial assistance to the families of Keralites jailed in Saudi Arabia. The programme was organised by Navodaya Samskarika Vedi and the Kerala Pravasi Sangham. Mr. Manjalamkuzhi Ali, MLA presided over the function. Renowned poet Mr. O. N. V. Kurup; Mr. E. M. Kabeer, President and Mr. Suresh Parumala, Secretary of Navodaya Samskarika Samithy and Mr. P. Saithalikutty, Secretary, Kerala Pravasi Sangham spoke on the occasion.

Databank on NRKs

The Chief Minister Mr. V. S. Achuthanandan has informed the State Assembly that preparing a detailed databank on non-resident Keralites is under the consideration of the Government. A study by the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), has found that there are around 18.38 lakh non-resident Keralites in different countries. The Government has taken notice of illegal visa agents in the state. 106 cases have been registered and 41 arrested this year in connection with visa malpractices, the Chief Minister said.

Says Mr. B. Suman, Director, Kerala Tourism, 'the season when the whole State drapes in refreshing green, this is the most suitable time for one to relax and unwind. The season is also ideal for couples to visit the destination.' An international campaign has also been launched with a new set of commercials, according to Mr. Suman. In Kerala, monsoon is a season for rejuvenation, when the people take special diet and ayurvedic therapies for rejuvenation and longevity. According to Ayurveda, monsoon is an ideal season to take treatments for various diseases. Innovative programmes like 'Rainwalks'in heritage destinations have also been launched. Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Tourism recently inaugurated a weeklong dance and music festival, 'Rhapsody of Rains', organised by Kerala Tourism to welcome the monsoon tourists.

Counselling for professional courses from July 10

The medical and engineering counselling process for admissions to the various professional colleges in Kerala will begin from July 10th. The first process of seat allotments have been published on July 2nd. Those selected candidates seeking medical and pharmacy courses need to submit their fees on July 24,25. Engineering and architecture students need to pay their fees from July 26 to 28. Apart from the traditional counselling, government has also decided to conduct online counselling methods to be introduced in the state for the admission process.This will be made available through selected websites.

This is soon going to be rectified with Meera chosen to play the female lead in noted filmmaker Shyam Prasad's forthcoming film, Ore Kadal. Global Village complex in Idukki likely

The World Malayalee Council (WMC), an organisation that support special interests of Malayalee sections world wide has put forward the concept of a Global Village complex in Kerala that is likely to come up in Kuttikannam at Idukki district. The proposed project estimated at a cost of Rs 1 billion, would include a residential complex, educational institutions, resorts and medical facilities. The model for the Global Village will be presented during the WMC Global Conference in Kochi scheduled from August 1-7 which is expected to be attended by many Malayalees from within the country and abroad."The Global Village is going to be a project in which all Malayalis would be able to buy shares. The first phase would be ready in three years, the second in seven years from now," says WMC, Kochi President.

Ice cream parlor case: LDF Govt files appeal

Kerala's ruling LDF government has filed an appeal before the High Court seeking to set aside the verdict judged by a lower court in the Kozhikode ice cream parlour case. The Kozhikode trial court earlier this year had set free all of the 16 accused in the sex racket case saying that there was not enough evidence to constitute the offences alleged against them. The govt in its appeal had criticised the trial court for not making any effort to question the witnesses who turned hostile and sought for a retrial of the case.

Nottam from director Sasi Paravoor is a notable film with much importance given to the ancient art form,Koodiyattam. Nedumudi Venu plays the central character of a Koodiyattam artist,Vasudeva Chakkyar in the film. His performance is simply superb.Margam Sathi as Saraswathy plays an equally good role as Chakkyar's patner on stage and puts up a brilliant performance. Jagathy Sreekumar,Arun, Janardhanan, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Salu Kuttanadu, Narayanankutty, Ajeer, MR Gopakumar, Vanitha, Samritha etc casts in the film. The film is a good take on human relationships told on the backdrop of a masterpiece art form. M Jayachandran's music is very pleasing. K.G. Jayan's cinematography is impressive. Filmmaker Paravoor deserves all credits for highlighting the minute details of this ancient art and bringing alive the cultural heritage of Kerala.

Lulu International convention centre in Trichur

The Lulu International Convention Centre,the largest of its kind in Kerala was opened in Trichur. The Center was inaugurated by the Kerala Chief Minister V. S.Achuthanandan in the presence of Opposition leader Oommen Chandy and many other political and government officials. The Gulf based EMKE Group has set up the Convention Centre housed at 18 acres of land near the Thrissur-Guruvayur highway which has been constructed at a cost of Rs40 crore. The convention center can accomodate 4,500 guests and has a hotel with 50 rooms,restaurants and helipad facility. Applauding the NRI project,Achuthanandan in his inauguaral speech asked for more NRI investments for the development of the infrastructure and tourism sectors in the State.

Meera's temple visit puts her in trouble

Malayalam Actress Meera Jasmine's recent visit to Rajaeswari temple in Taliparamba near Kannur has created fresh rows similar to the recent Sambarimala controversy. Meera,a non Hindu is said to have made offerings at the temple and this has led to protest from the temple devotees as non Hindus are not permitted in the temple premises. With this the temple authorities decided to perform purification rituals and the actress came up with an apology and even said to have paid funds towards the cost for the purifying rituals.

Mgmt colleges to move court against new Bill

The Kerala government passing the Kerala Professional Colleges Bill in Assembly,has brought stong objection from the Management colleges which threatenend that they would approach the court seeking review of changes in the provisions made in the new law. The new Bill seeks 50% seats reserved for the SC and other backward categories and physically challenged students. Of the remaining 50%, only 30% is allotted to the managements as privileges seats(15%) and NRI seats(15%). General merit satnds at 18% and 2% reserved for exceptionally good students from arts and sports. Private managements were on the view that the new bill were too hard for them to be implemented that the colleges would be rather closed down than being forced to follow the new laws.

Kerala to get a similar Vidharba package

Kerala would get a similar Vidharba package as announced by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to contain the rising farmer suicides. A Rs 3750 crore relief package was released for the distressed farmers in the Vidharbha region. A similar financial package is soon to be worked out for three districts of Kerala mainly affected by the draught in State. The package would focus on affordable credit, rescheduling of loans, surface irrigation development etc.

CADD to open new centers in Kerala

The Chennai firm, Computer Aided Drafting and Designing Centre which offers various training programmes in computer aided design courses has plans to extend its services in Kerala by opening up more Centers."Besides the 22 Centres, CADD is planning to start another 15 to meet the requirements of students in 75 engineering colleges and polytechnics in Kerala," said the firm's National Manager.The Center offers various courses, including those relating to computer aided designing and drafting, interior design, project planning,management etc. It also plans to introduce a Masters Diploma programme in mechanical, civil, electrical, architectural, interior architecture and design, colour graphics in all of its centers.
