Directors turn actors in Pachakuthira

Popular filmmakers of Malayalam film industry including director, Fazil are making appearance in Kamal's Pachakuthira. The story is told on the background of film creation. Fazil who had earlier also made appearances in many a films will be playing the role of a director in Pachakuthira. Other well known directors like Jayaraj, Viji Thampy and youngster Roshan Andrews are also said to enact similar roles in the film. The film is due for Vishu release.

BPL Mobile rebranded as Hutch in Kerala circle

Cellular service provider, Hutchison Essar has announced of its rebranding of BPL Mobile Cellular as Hutch in the Kerala circle. The firm has lately obtained BPL Mobile Cellular and the rebranding move is as a part of its acquisition process. “We will keep working towards expanding and enhancing the network and service levels in the circle. The Hutch brand stands for great product and customer service, which will soon be introduced to our customers in Kerala,” said Hutch’s South India operation director, Samuel Selvakumar.

Rashtram directed by Anil C. Menon is a political film which has certainly thrilled the Suresh Gopi fans. Though many a film of this genre has recently being made, Suresh Gopi's character of Malaikkal Thommy stands out and is mighty enough to win the hearts of the audience. However the film leads to an irritating lengthy climax. Laya, Madhu, Venu, Thilakan etc casts in the film. Scriptwriter Sajivan and Anil Menon has done well with the catchy dialogues and adding in the real life political scenarios. It’s worth an entertainer especially for the Suresh Gopi fans.

Kochi ODI ticket sales from today

The sale of tickets for the ODI cricket match between India and England scheduled for April 6th at Kochi between India and England will begin today. The sale of the tickets will be inaugurated by cricketer Lakshmipathy Balaji and Bollywood hero Jackie Shroff at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday. Federal Bank is the ODI's official banker which will sell the tickets. Balaji will give away the tickets to Federal Bank. Actor Jackie Sheroff will conduct the first sale of the tickets.

Vineeth to replace Prithviraj in Nilavu

Lenin Rajendran’s new film Nilavu projected Prithviraj as the hero of the film. But it is now understood that Vineeth will be replacing him. It seems the conflict in dates had caused inconvenience for Prithvi which is why he has opted out of the film. Left Democratic Front (LDF) has given priority for the economic development of the State in its election manifesto which was released by LDF convener Paloli Mohammed Kutty. Quickening of economic growth was projected in the document along with schemes for promoting agriculture, traditional industries and fisheries sectors. Other promises included subsidized rates in rice and wheat for the poor, and ensuring basic amenities like house, electricity, water and toilet etc. Special investments and projects for attracting NRIs were also mentioned.

Kerala’s Kochi port has plans for a cruise terminal of world class status to cater to the needs of passengers reaching the port on international liners. On Monday the esteemed British vessel, Queen Elizabeth-2 was called at Kochi port with 1540 passengers. Renowned Malayalam poet Kunjunni Master passed away at his residence at Valappad near Trissur on Sunday. He has written many a poems for children and is well known for his humorous writings. He had given immense contribution to the Malayalam literature with his powerful poetic verses. He was honoured with the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award for his poetic collection Aksharathettu. He was unmarried and was 79. Governor R L Bhatia and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy expressed deep sorrow at the death of the great poet.

Sandhya Mohan's Kilukkam Kilukilukkam, the sequel to Priyadarsan’s hit comedy flick, Kilukkam which made its release recently is projected as a major hit in many of the theaters in Kerala. With the summer holidays set in, the film is drawing huge family crowds especially kids who are enjoying the comedy antics in spite of its shortcomings. Though Mohanlal makes a small role, the film is being promoted as a Mohanlal film which also had come in the film's favor. Though the film had the potential to capture the audience newcomer Sandhya Menon could not succeed in bringing out the same comedy effect through the story. Jayasurya, Kunjako Bobban,Kavya Madhavan etc casts in the film along with the old faces like Jaggathi, Innocent and even Mohanlal makes a guest appearance in the film. However the major cast are not so the typical comedy actors and hence fail to carry on the standards of Priyadarshan's Kilukkam. A division bench of the Kerala High Court has passed a judgment allowing the priests and nuns to practice law as a part of profession. The Bar Council of India has earlier filed a petition claiming a complete ban on the entry of clergy class into the legal profession which termed it as ‘illegal’. The Kerala High Court divison bench comprising of Chief justice and other judges dismissed the appeal saying that being a priest or nun was not a disqualification for appointment for a government or private job.

G Devarajan becomes a memory

Malayalam music director G Devarajan died of heart attack early on Wednesday morning. He was 78 and is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. In his five-decades-long career as a music director, Devarajan, rendered music for over 350 Malayalam movies, including for popular ones like 'Nadhi', 'Oru Penninde Katha', 'Swamy Ayyappan' and 'Chemparathi'. Devarajan won the Kerala State Film award for music five times and for drama three times and was also the recipient of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Fellowship. Teaming up with lyricist and poet O N V Kurup and later with lyricist Vayalar Rama Varma, Devarajan made the songs of KPAC dramas all-time hits. The 'Vayalar-Devarajan' combine proved the most successful team till the death of Vayalar in the late 1970s. Besides Malayalam, he composed music for 20 Tamil and four Kannada movies.

Lanka had lot of hype ahead of its release but is struggling at the theaters. The film is being dropped from many of the theaters in a week’s time. But Ravanan alternatively had better collections during the opening weekend. Though it gradually slowed down, the film may eventually pick up which justifies for its shoe-string budget. Thousands of women throng the Attukal Devi temple to perform the 'pongala' ritual, where a kind of rice porridge is cooked and offered to the temple Goddess for blessings. The District Tourism Promotion Council(DTPC) at Kannur has recently launched a scheme called ‘Nadi Darshan’ to encourage the river viewing at the Valapattanam river and attract more domestic and international tourists to the region. The DTPC in a joint venture with the Kairali Heritage Resorts at Kattampalli has started the program which allows people to sail through the river in a Kettuvallam and capture the beauty of the backwaters, canals and explore the rustic nature. Clash over SSLC question paper lapse

Following the news spreading that the SSLC question papers were found carelessly attended, heavy clashes broke out between the police and pro Left youth activists in several districts of the State. It was alleged that parcels of question papers were carelessly handled by a courier company in Kozhikode while transporting them to education offices in Kozhikode and Wayanad districts without proper security. Meanwhile the district collector and other officials claimed that there was no question paper bundles found tampered with. Last year’s Kerala SSLC exams were rescheduled after leakage of question papers.

The major setback for the UDF government’s development came in when the Rs 1,500 crore Smart City IT mega project was asked by the election commission to defer from the signing the final deal. The Vizhinjam Terminal at Thiruvananthapuram and the Petronet LNG terminal at Kochi were also to get a kick off with the Prime Minister expected to inaugurate the laying of foundation stones for the projects. Actor M S Trippunithura passes away

Veteran Malayalam film actor and TV serial personality M S Trippunithara was found dead on a train on Wednesday morning while he was traveling from Chennai to Kochi. He is expected to have died following a heart attack while in sleep. He was 60 and survived by wife and 3 daughters. A renowned drama artist and Sanskrit scholar, Tripunithura had acted in over 200 Malayalam films including character and comedian roles. His first Malayalam film was ‘Kadalamma’. He was also a popular TV actor and acted in many serials. Many from the film industry paid homage to the departed actor.

With the polutry business seeming to suffer under the wake of birdflu hitting India, the rabbits in Kerala are going high in demand in the markets especially in the Gulf countries. There has been an increasing demand in this low fat meat with orders flooding in from the overseas for export of rabbit meat. Rabbit farms are gaining more popularity with more investors showing interest in even setting up rabbit farms in the Gulf countries. "It's not a fallout of the bird flu threat. Even before the epidemic came to India, we have been getting orders from abroad. But the farm owners and suppliers are struggling to meet the requirements of the domestic market. We are doing everything to encourage rabbit farms and increase production. Very soon, we hope to export meat" says the state animal husbandry department.

Pay Commission report implementation to be delayed

With the announcement of assembly polls in the State, and model code of conduct already prepared, the Election Commission has asked the Kerala government to delay the implementation of the Pay Commission report. The model code of conduct has come in effect from March 1st but the EC has directed the government that no financial grant could be announced at this stage on the revision of wages for government employees and teachers till the conclusion of the election procedures in the State. Chief Minister Chandy had earlier sought EC’s permission on progressing with implementation of the proposals.

Suresh Gopi wounded on the sets of Rashtram

Actor Suresh Gopi was badly wounded while shooting in Kochi on the sets of the film, Rashtram. The actor was engaged in some action scenes along with villains while the misfortune took place on Friday night. He had a scene where he had to take dynamite and throw. But before he could do so the dynamite exploded leaving his right hand palm burned. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. The doctors had advised him to take complete rest for couple of weeks till he recovers. Rashtram was scheduled for release on March 24th.

Sonia Gandhi starts poll campaign in Kochi

The government has decided to open up new passport office at Malappuram district to cater to the needs of the increasing number of applicants around Malappuram and Palaghat districts. The district especially have large number of people working in the Gulf countries and the current passport office in the Northern Kerala at Kozhikode is already finding it difficult to meet the demands of the applicants, with its office receiving over 1 lakh applications a year from Malappuram & Palghat districts alone.The new passport offices would be opened soon depending upon the availability of manpower and logistical back up", said External Affairs Minister, E. The macho hero, Suresh Gopi’s Chintamani Kola Case is far in progress at Kochi. The film showcases Sursh Gopi in the role of a bold and bright criminal lawyer who fights for justice with his incomparable skills in the court room. As the title of the film suggests, the movie is revolves around a murder mystery of a girl, named Chintamani played by actress Bhavana. This Shaji Kailas film has a large cast with Rekha, Vani Vishwanath, Thilakan, Biju Menon, Saikumar, Manian Pilla Raju , Bhiman Raghu, T P Madhavan etc.

Rajamanickam still on the run

There is no way one could stop the bumper success of the Mammootty starrer Rajamanickam. The film which had its release last year is still running high on demand at theaters in Kerala making a super record of all times in the Malayalam film industry. Rajamanickam has collected a whopping sum of Rs 43 Lakhs in 113 days breaking the Mohanlal flick, Narasimham’s record collection of Rs 39 Lakhs in 155 days. Both the films made its huge shares from the theaters of Kerala’s capital. If Narasimham made it from Srikumar theatre, Rajamanikam is still in command at New Theater in Thiruvananthapuram.

CUSAT shut down following students strike

Following the continuing students strike, the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has been shut down until further notice. The agitation got further worsened with students assaulting the University Registrar, Dr M Ramachandran on his way to his office on Thursday. Following the students protest, the CUSAT authorities announced that all classes, including research classes, have been suspended.

Meera Jasmines sis plays heroine in Ravanan

Popular Malayalam actress, Meera Jasmine's sister Jenny Jasmine is looking for a breakthrough into Malayalam films. She will play the lead role in Kala Bhavan Mani’s film, ‘Ravanan’ which is due for release next week. Jenny had acted in few TV serials. She did a notable role in K. K. Rajeev’s serial, ‘Orma’ as a mentally distressed mother. In 'Ravanan', she plays the bold character of a college lecturer. Jenny reveals that she follows her own style of acting and has no plans to compete with her younger sister, Meera. Jenny had lately changed her name to Megha.

Govt moves to implement Narendran Commission report

The State Government has gone forward with the Narendra Commisiion report and has given orders to put into practice the reservation processes for the backward classes accordingly as indicated by the report. As by the Narendran Commission report, appointments for the government services reserved for those representing the Backward Communities should be appropriately filled by the reserved categories. To ensure that the reserved seats are properly implemented, a committee headed by the Chief Minister had been formed to monitor the affairs on this regard.

Kanal Kannadi

Directed by A.K. Jayan Poduval, Kanal Kannadi is a movie on real life social issues in the society. The film tells the story of a meritorious student from a poor family who gets admission to medical college and later commits suicide when she is faced with humiliation from the college authorities for not being able to pay the college fees. Karthika, Indrajith, Manya, Shelly, Geetha Salam, Thilakan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Vijaya Raghavan, Bheeman Raghu etc casts in the film. Edwin Abraham composes the music for the lyrics of ONV Kurup, E. Ramachandran, Prasad, Pisharody etc. The film is produced by K. Madhu and SV Joseph.

Karyavattom Technopark campus to get new block by October

The Technopark campus at Karyavattom, will open its new block Tejaswini by October which will be housed in a 12 storeyed building with an additional 6 lakh sqft of workspace. The upper 8 floors will be dedicated for the IT companies which have already been completely booked by the IT firms. The block will be build at an estimated cost of Rs.60 crore and will have car parking facilities, restaurant etc. Besides this, the campus is also planning major expansions with the Leela group to start its next phase of expansion.
