Superstar films doing well

Malayalam film industry had always been dominated by the presence of its superstars. And this Christmas season too had witnessed some major releases of the heroes. Mohanlal's Shaji Kailas film Bab Kalyani is reportedly doing major collections at the boxoffice. The mass entertainer released in 60 centers across the State had already grossed over Rs 1.44 Crore in its first 2 weeks of release. Blessy's Mammootty starrer Palunku also is highly admired among the viewers. And like earlier Blessy films this too stands in quality and is expected to do wonders at the box office though it could come a little late. However initial reports indicate that the other Xmas releases like Roshan Andrews Notebook and Smart City are not doing their rounds as expected but could gradually pickup.

Baba Kalyani

Baba Kalyani directed by Shaji Kailas promises to be another action packed thriller. A treat especially for the Lal fans who wanted to see their hero back again in the cop's uniform. Of course its Lal show all the way. The film also keeps a good level of family and romance scenes making it a perfect entertainer. Power packed script writer S.N. Swamy does it well with the script. However the second half of the film drags a little bit. But no wonder the film would make it to good collections this holiday season.

Palunku

Palunku meaning Crystal is another thoughtful film from the talented director Blessy who makes films of substance. The film takes you on an emotional ride with moments of laughter, sadness and sentiments. The film tells a simple story of a good farmer, Monichen enacted by Mammotty who makes it to perfection with every other scene. The climax scenes are truly heart warming. A realistic and quality film well told with a good script and brilliant performances from the entire cast. Mohan Sitara's songs penned to the lines of Kaithapram adds flavor to the theme of the film. Blessy has once again proved that high class movies can be made in Malayalam with simple practical tales.

Old hit song, Paavada Venam to be recreated

One of the popular old hit Mlayalam song titled Paavada Venam Melaada Venam.. is making a come back to Malayalam films again. This old classic composed by Shyam and penned by Biju Thirumala had Yesudas singing for the I.V.Sasi film Angadi which had Jayan in the lead. The reproduction of the same in an entirely different setting is now being considered by Iv Shashi again in his upcoming film, Kaala bazar which will star Suresh Gopi in the lead. M Jayachandran will do the recomposing for the song.

Aakasham

Aakasham is directed by Sunderdas. The film has comedian Harishree Asokan playing the hero. He had earlier donned a lead role in the film, Kusurthi but unfortunately went unnoticed. Actress Jyothirmayi pairs opposite Asokan in the film. T A Rasaq pens the script. KPASC Lalita, vijish etc features int he film. The film will start with its shooting by Jan end in Kochi and premises.

Protest over Saddam execution

There were wide spread protest all over the State following the former Iraqi President's execution on Saturday. Kearla government and opposition joined in staging protest with demonstrations and marches held in several places across Kerala. Kerala also observed a half day hartal which went off peacefully. Several leaders including Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan contempt Saddam's death saying that it had raised a grim challenge to world peace.

Mayavi for R-Day

The Shafi film Mayavi starring Mammootty in the lead is set to grace theaters on the next year's Republic Day, Jan 26th 2007. Gopika is the heroine. Mamootty plays the character Mahi in the film who voices against injustice in the society. Sai Kumar, Manoj K Jayan, Vijaya Raghavan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Salim Kumar are the others in the cast. Rafi-Mecartin has the script. Vayalar Sharath Chandra Varma has the lyrics penned for Alex Paul's music.

Actor Sreenivasan is signing more films of serious genre these days. After Yes your Honour and Lal Jose upcoming film, Sreeni has signed for debutant Suveeran's short film, The Sound Machine. The film is said to be a short story adaptation based on Roald Dahl's story by the same name. Sreenivasan plays the lead role and enacts the character of a scientist and nature lover, C.V.Das in the film. The young filmmaker Suveeran says he intends to screen the film on television rather than theaters.

Kerala tourism call upon NRK investors

Kerala tourism is opening up huge investment oppurtunities for Non-Resident Keralites(NRK) in promoting the State's health tourism. As a part of this, the govt is even holding an investor meet in Kochi from March 23 – 27 which would be participated by major hospitals, health insurance companies, policy makers and international institutions that would showcase the opportunities in the health tourism sector. Tourism Minister had also extended all help to NRK investors who venture to set up health care centres, regardless of whether its allopathy, ayurveda or nature cure.

Marking the 2nd anniversary of the dreaded Tsunami tragedy, Kerala government has announced a Rs 1 billion package for areas hit hardest by the devasating tsunami waves. Kerala CM, V S Achuthanandan has announced Rs one lakh each for families of those who lost their lives in the 2004 Dec 26, tragedy. The CM was inaugurating the Social Security Scheme for tsunami victims in Alappad. Special prayers, tributes and candlelight marches were among the events organised in rememberance of those who lost their lives.

V M Vinu with Jayaram again

Filmmaker V M Vinu who has made superstars films like Balettan, Bus Conductor, Vesham etc is making his next film with Jayaram in the lead. His latest film, Yes Your Honour made on a low budget starring Sreenivasan, Padmapriya which told the story of lawyers was a success among the audiences. Jayaram's earlier film Mayilattam was also directed by V M Vinu in which he played dual role. The new Jayaram film will be produced by Uthirattathi films and the rest of the cast are yet to be announced.

Satyan's new film launched

Satyan Anthikkadu's new film yet to be tilted has been launched recently. The pooja function of the film was held at Chennai and popular music director Illayaraja had inaugurated the function by litting the lamp. M M Hamsa under the banner of Kalasangham produces the film. The film has Illayaraja composing the music for Vayalar Sharatchandra Varma's lyrics. Dilip, Mukesh, Urvasi, are in the cast. The shooting of the film will start shortly at Palakkad and Malampuzha and is projected for 2007 Vishu.

Govt dissolves Pariyaram college board

The administrative body of the Advanced College of Medical Sciences at Pariyaram which runs medical, nursing and pharmacy colleges in Kannur has been dissolved by the CPM led Kerala government. The governing body was controlled by former Minister M V Raghavan and he was removed of charges and fresh elections for the governing body will be held in six months. The dissolution was achieved through a change of the bylaw. Meanwhile the former minister has said that he would move HC to challenge the dissolution.

Meenmutty Hydel Tourism project opened

Kerala Government has plans to implement more new hydel tourism projects at Aniyirankal in Idukki, Edamalayar in Ernakulam and Peringalkoothu in Thrissur district. This was informed by Minister for Power while opening the Lower Meenmutty Hydel Tourism project near Palode. The project is the second hydel tourism project in the state. This eco-friendly project on the shores of Vamanapuram River offers boating, river rafting, and mobile ice cream parlour. The riverside huts are also an attraction here. The minister also said that the govt was taking initiatives to accomodate more foriegn tourists at the Munnar and Mattupetty regions.

JC Daniel award for Aranmula Ponnamma

Veteran Malayalam actress Aranmula Ponnamma has been chosen for the the Kerala government's prestigious J C Daniel film award. The government's highest film award which carries Rs 1 lakh and a citation has been awarded to Ponnamma for her immense contributions to the Malayalam films over the past decades. She is a well known mother figure in Malayalam films and has won many awards including national film award for best supporting actress in 1996 for her role in Kathapurushan.

Dilip-Kavya song to be filmed in Australia

Dilip's New Year release, Inspector Garud is currently undergoing with its final phase of shooting. The film directed by Johny Antony is a humour film and has the popular pair Dilip-Kavya in the lead. The film has a song sequence with the duo together which is to be filmed in Australia. It has become a common trend that foreign locales are being chosen for picturing songs. For their earlier film, Lion, the two songs were shot in New Zealand while the Runway song, Shabba Shabba was shot in Bangkok.

Sreesanth to be honoured with gold medal

Kerala government has announced its decision to honour Keralite cricketer and Indian paceman Sreesanth with a gold medal for his commendable performance in the test match against South Africa in Johannesburg. Besides all those Keralites who had won medals at the recent Doha Asian Games will also be honoured with cash awards. The Kerala CM said that the cricketer's brilliant performace was an appreciation for Kerala. Sreesanth had his best figures in the match and also the Man of the Match which in turn helped India win a historic Test win in S Africa.

Kerala tops again in literacy rates

Kerala has retained the top position in the literacy rates among the various states acoss the country. The recent National Sample Survey Organisation has reported Kerala's literacy rate as 83% among the rural population while urban literacy rate was 85%. Bihar reported the lowest literacy rate with about 50% of people between 5-29 years said to have not gone to any educational institution.

Kerala government expressed unhappiness over Tamil Nadu's stance in the Mullaperiyar issue and said that Tamil Nadu decision to pull out of talks was no solution to settle the issues amicably. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had said that it would approach Supreme Court for resolving Mullaperiyar dam dispute stating that the talks between the two states were over. "It would be unfortunate if Tamil Nadu made any unilateral move that would scuttle efforts to settle the long-pending issue through talks", said Kerala Water Resources Minister.

Oruvan is a psycho thriller directed by Vinu Anand. The film tells the story of a psychic person who end up killing women and is in hunt by the police. Indrajit plays the main character in the film and does a convincing performance. Prithviraj dons as a police officer again in the film. Meera vasudev is okay. Cinematography and other technical aspects also excels. Though the theme is different and well told, the film may not succeed to hold the attention of the viewers.

President in Kochi

The Kerala government will soon set up a databank on non resident Keralites(NRKs), said Home Minister on the sidelines of the an inaugural function in Thrissur talking on the contribution of non-resident Keralites to the development of the State. He also said that the government was working on a project to help with the education of children of NRKs who die while working abroad. A NORKA cell in the Police Department is also being considered. He also called upon more NRK investments in the Kerala's tourism sector which is likely to undergo a rapid growth over the coming years.

After Lal Jose's Classmates which went on to become a superhit another campus film is getting readied for release for the upcoming holiday season. Roshan Andrew who made his debut with Udayanannu Tharaum is done with his second film, Notebooks which is made on a big budget. The film tells the story of teenagers and deals with adolescence issues told on the backdrop of a boarding school in Ootty. Though the film cast mostly newcomers, it is expected to make a huge impact on the young audience and the success of Classmates comes as a good note for it. Notebook is slated to reach theaters during Christmas on December 21st.

Jayakrishnan murder: Accused set free

KANNUR: Shaji, Dinesh Babu and A K Anil Kumar, acquitted by the apex court in connection with the murder of K T Jayakrishnan at Mokeri East UP School in Paramel, Kannur in 1999 have been released from Kannur Central Jail. Though the fourth accused Sundaran has been acquitted, he has not been released since he is undergoing life imprisonment in another case. The Supreme Court commuted the death penalty imposed on Pradeepan to life imprisonment. The court order was received by the jail authorities at 9 am this morning. Those released were received by party activists led by CPM central committee member E P Jayarajan outside the jail premises.

Ban on politics in college campus

Kerala High Court has ordered the Universities and heads of academic institutions to ban all forms of political activities on the State's college campuses.The HC bench also said that the college authorities had the powers to seek police help to curb such activities like strikes, dharnas in the campuses and the police were bound to facilitate it. The court also termed strikes as weapons used by labour force for establishing their demands under the labour laws and said that they were not academic tools to be used against the teaching faculty or against the management to vindicate the rights of the students.

Kerala government has decided to put a ban on the usage of plastic items in the State including items like plastic bags, bottles and cups.The decision on this regard was taken in a cabinet meeting after concerns on environmenal pollution due to the increased usage of plastic materials. This was informed by the LDF convenor who said that the party had decided not to have NCP in the Front due to the changed political climate after the recent merger of Karunakaran's DIC with NCP. The merger was resisted by many among Karunakaran supporters who had even left the party and NCP's ouster from the Front would now mean a major blow to the veteran leader.

Pakal directed by debutant M.A. Nishad is a thoughtful movie that focus on socialy relevant subject. The film talks on the increasing farmer suicide incidents witnessed among the North Malabar region. Prithviraj as the TV reporter puts up a fine performance. Jyothirmayi too is impressive in her role. Sudeesh, T G Ravi etc are ommendable. The crew of the film deserves a mention for handling a real life subject with utmost care. However the narrative style makes it feel more like a documentary film making it rather less inspiring to the viewers.

Sabarimala witnesses rise in pilgrims

The popular pilgrim center, Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala is witnessing a significant rise in the number of pilgrims visitng the temple this year. This year's pilgrim season starting from November has seen a heavy rush with the ongoing Mandala pooja season. The shrine is thronged with devotees rushing in and many of them have to wait in long queues to get a darshan at the Sannidhanam of Lord Ayyappa. To keep control of the large number of devotees, this time around the authorities are even planning to let in more number of pilgrims, 92 per minute to enter the shrine through the holy eighteen steps instead of the 72 pilgrims per minute now in place.

In an effort to curb the increasing video piracy in the State Kerala government is on with an anti piracy drive to take stern action against those studios faking video casettes. As a part of it raids were conducted in various studios and shops in different parts of the State including Kochi, Idukki, Kottayam, Allapuzha, Thiruvananthapuram etc. And authorities from the film industry even allege that those involved in the video piracy even include top police officers and their supporters without which production and distribution of pirated videos could not grow.

The ayurvedic fabric have various medicinal properties and is available in dress materials like kurtas, salwars, sarees and bedsheets. These handloom fabric dyed in medicinal herbs gives a cooling effect and is also claimed to be beneficial to those suffering from blood pressure, diabetes, rheumatism and skin disorders. LDF bags Thiruvambadi seat

The ruling LDF government has won the Thiruvambadi Assembly by-elections retaining the victory from the last assembly elections. CPI(M) candidate George M. Thomas has won the seat here with a margin of just 246 votes defeating the UDF candidate. While Thomas bagged 64,112 votes, Ummer got 63,866 votes and the Bharatiya Janata Party's Gireesh Thevally 4,758 votes. "The margin of victory is an indication that the speed of my government's functioning has to be stepped up, and it will be done," said Kerala CM reacting to the victory.

The 11th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK 2006) would kick off in Thiruvananthapuram from December 8th. Around 143 films from various parts of the world will be screened at the week long event. The fest would also have 8 Malayalam films that would be screened under the category Malayalam Cinema Today. M.P. Sukumaran Nair's Malayalam film 'Drishtantham' would be featured under the competitive section. Also 7 Indian films would be screened under India Cinema Today category. Kerala CM would inaugurate the festival while Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi and actress Sharmila Tagore will be the chief guests.

Govt to adopt new tourism strategies

The Kerala government is set out to adopt new tourism strategies to revive the tourism promotion in the state. The new tourism policies would focus on responsible tourism, innovative strategies and marketing techniques. The Govt also plans to spend more money on promotion of its tourist spots within the country and abroad. "The Government will ensure representation in all the travel and trade fairs abroad", said tourism Minister. He also added that Culture, Health, Forest, Irrigation, Electricity and Fisheries departments of the State would be explored for the overall development of the tourism sector.

Shafi's Mayavi progresses in Kochi

Thiruvambady records 80pc polling

Over 80 percent polling was reported at the Thiruvambady assembly by-election held in Kozhikode on Monday.The polling went peaceful amidst high security. Digital cameras were installed in all booths to record the voting proceedings. Both the ruling LDF and UDF are confident and keeping their stakes high for the victory.The counting will begin at 8am on Dec 7th.

Govt clears 500 acres for Technocity project

The Kerala government has given clearance to the 500 acres of land that would be acquired for the proposed Technocity project at Pallippuram. The clearance for the land acquisition was given after the State Cabinet meeting and Chief Minister informed that the land for the project would be acquired in a fast track mode. The Technocity project is a part of the expansion plan of the current Technopark complex at Kazhakootam in Thiruvananthapuram.

Baba Kalyani set for Christmas

Kerala to set up Veterinary University

Kerala government is keen to set up a Veterinary university in State for promoting veterinary and animal sciences. The Minister for state Animal Husbandry has informed that a varsity would be set up in the State to develop Kerala's animal husbandry sectors. Facilities for getting information on animal health care would be made available in the State itself rather than depending on other neighbouring states, he said while talking on the sidelines of the inaugural funtion of Animal Husbandry Training Centre near Thalayolaparambu, Kottayam.

New areas of gold zones located in Kerala

Geologists of the Karnataka based Deccan Gold Mines had located new areas for gold mining in the tribal region of Attapadi of Palakkad district in Kerala. Based on the explorations of Geological Survey of India, the potentialities of gold mining is focused at the Nilambur region in Malappuram district and at Attapadi in Palakkad district. Studies indicate that Kerala's gold reserves contain 13.88 grams of gold for every tonne of ore which makes it of exceptionally high quality.

Cong not happy with Communist memorial

The Kerala government's decision to build a memorial in Kannur jail on rememberance of 4 communist youths is not been recieved by the Opposition Congress. The memorial is been planned for the four Communist youths who are said to have taken part in the Kayyur struggle and was put to jail and later sentenced to death by the British. However some of the Congress leaders are on the stance that the Kayyur Agrarian riot has nothing to do with the freedom struggle. Meantime based on a petition recieved at the Kerala High Court the work that was already started for the memorial has been asked to stop by the Court, and a further ruling on this is likely next week.
