US Malayalees keen on investments in State

Federation of Kerala Association in North America (FOKANA) chief has said that more US based Keralites were keen on bringing in more investments into the State. FOKANA an organisation for Malayali associations in North America and Canada has also plans of building a domestic airport in the state's Pathanamthitta district. The project which is seeking the state and Centre's approval would be financed by the overseas Malayalis, he said.

Kerala to retender on Vizhinjam port project

The Kerala government after being denied of security clearance for the Rs 4,360-crore Vizhinjam International Container Terminal is even has plans to retender on the project. It is known that the project was being denied as the Center govt did not favor Chinese companies taking up the contracts. The government has even taken up the matter to the Center to be discussed with Prime Minister to reconsider the centre's decision on the issue.

The main contenst is between CPI-M's George M. Thomas and UDF ally IUML's V.M. Ummer Master. Innocent and Sreenivasan as the senior and assistant lawyer collegues perfectly brings in the humorous touch all the way. Their dialogue delivery and comedy timings are worth a mention. Jagathy is at his usual vest. T. Damodharan's script is a strong asset to the film and highlights the significance of valued ideals in today's society. The film has two songs but however has not much relevance.

Govt orders inquiry on road project

The Kerala government has ordered a vigilance inquiry into the Rs 16.12 billion World Bank-aided road project which was signed by the previous UDF govt. This comes in wake of alleged corruption involved in the project which led to the death of a Malaysian contractor who committed suicide claiming delay in disbursing funds from the Kerala govt. The State govt had Rs 3.88 billion share in the project while remaining was funded by the World Bank. Though the project kicked off in 2003, it got disrupted after 30% of the first phase of work was done.

Karutha Pakshikal directed by Kamal is an emotional family film that brings out the dark side of life in slums. Mammootty puts up a brilliant performance in the character of the Tamil immigrant Murugan which in turn is the biggest highlight of the film. Meena and Padmapriya are impressive in their respective roles. Child actor Malavika's performance is really heart warming. Mohan Sitara scores with few food melody songs. The narration style, script and well etched characters are definitly a plus for this realistic film but Kamal could have added a bit more pace to the film.

Actor Naren is on a comeback trail to Malayalam films. He who had acted in Malayalam films was earlier known as Sunil. He had acted in Achuvinte Amma opposite Meera Jasmine. Later he got busy with Tamil industry. But lately his popuarity has gone up much higher after the release of Classmates in which he played a small but noticeble role of a lovestruck singer. The film went on to become a superhit. Now Naren is offered a significant role in Shyam Prasad's Ore Kadal which stars Mammootty and Meera Jasmine in the lead. Naren who is still on demand in Tamil says he would prefer to act both in Malayalam and Tamil films.

Govt goes tough against ragging in colleges

In the wake of certain reports on ragging in some colleges, Kerala Government has issued a series of tough guidelines against ragging in educational institutions. Students found guilty of such practices would be subject to strict criminal charges which could lead upto two years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000. Complaints on any ragging need to be inquired by the college heads within 7 days from being reported and after preliminary investigation the same should be reported to the nearest police station for further nvestigations, said the govt release.

Tension between Kerala and Tamil Nadu over the Mullaperiyaer dam row prevails in the bordering districts of the two states. Bus services were hit and protestors took demonstration to the roads causing traffic blocks especially on highways linking Palakkad, Idukki and Thiruvananthapuram to the Tamilnadu side of Coimbatore, Teni and Kanyakumari districts. Thousands of trucks were stranded across the border and the blockade across the State even disrupted normal life of commuters and even Sabarimala pilgrims.

The issues relating to the Mulleperiyar talks between Tamil Nadu and Kerala has reached a new roadblocks with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister threatning to pull out from the chief ministerial talks scheduled for Nov 29th. In view with the the Kerala High Court officials barring No 13 to its courtrooms in its new building in Kochi following superstitious practice, the Supreme Court had told the High Court not to encourage superstitions. The Kerala High Court, which has 13 courtrooms, does not have number 13 courtroom. After No 12 comes courtroom 14. "The High Court is an institution. It should not be allowed to encourage this sort of superstitions," said SC bench taking note of the matter.

After being chief of KPCC and DIC party, it is the third time Muraleedharan is elected for another political party. Also veteran leader Karunakaran was inducted into NCP'ss Working Committee. Reacting to LDF's stance, Muraleedharan said "We are part of the LDF now and we will not come out of it. NCP has been with the LDF for a long time. Chief Minister Achuthanandan has said that the State government would set up a new company, Infrastructure Kerala Ltd, aimed at attracting investments of non resident Keralite investors from abroad. Veteran actor Jagathy Sreekumar as Unnithan is equally outstanding. The three heroines, Kavya ,Samvrutha and Sindhu Menon has done justice to their respective roles. Alex Paul's music is impressive. Cinematagraphy and art direction also excels. Director M Padmakumar deserves all the credits for beautifully portraying a family political drama with vigour and fine narration.

The Mullaperiyar dam is put on high alert as water level has crossed the 136 ft mark on Tuesday. Minister for Water Resources has been visiting the dam to inspect the dam and take account of the situation. The people living near the dam premises are being alerted and the increasing water level is causing serious concerns relating to the safety of the dam. The heavy rains over the recent days has attributed to a steady inflow to the dam which has led to the crossing of the dam's maximum storage level.

Pele, Carl Lewis to launch Sports lottery

Olympic track star Carl Lewis and footballing lagend Pele will be in Kerala to promote sports lottery in the State. "Lewis is arriving in India on Dec 15 and after his engagements in other parts of the country he would be here in Kerala. Pele is also arriving in the third week of December and both of them would promote the sports lottery," informed Kerala's Sports Minister. The launch of the sports lottery is aimed to help build sports infrastructure in towns and villages across the state. All the 5 crew in an aircraft had a miraculous escape after navy's aircraft had a crash land at a pady field near Veloor near Kochi. The mishap took place after the aircraft took off from the Naval air Station at Kochi and due to engine failure the aircraft was forced to crash land at a paddyfield. The aircraft carried 5 naval officers from the Southern Naval Command in Kochi and all are said to be safe.

Chakkaramuthu is the comeback film from Lohitadas- Dileep team after a couple of years gap. The film is a story themed on village romance where a simple tailor falls in love for his childhood friend. Dileep as the hero excels in his role as the tailor with his unique mannerisms and body launguages aptly suiting his character. Kavya Madhavan is at her usual best. Lohitadas does a great job with his good narration of earthly characters supported with a good script. However the climax of the film is a rather big disappointment. There are also reports that an alternative climax is being planned out. Jayachandran's music offers few good songs.

Kunhikoonan sequel planned

A sequel on Dileep's blockbuster film, Kunjikoonan is being planned out for next year. Dileep had played dual role in the film which was well appreciated by the family audiences. Unlike the first part, the next version will not be directed by Sasishankar. But Dileep will be playing the lead role in the film. Meanwhile the producers are keen to find an appropriate director for the film. A sequel of another Dileep hit, CID Moosa is also in the making.

ID cards for land deals to be made compulsory

To keep a check on the increasing illegal land deals, State government has said that it would make compulsory that all land transaction deeds to be carried out through photo identification cards and thumb impressions of the dealers.This was proposed by the Minister for land registration. Those involved in the deal both the purchaser and seller need to provide photo identity cards and thumb impressions and these will be affixed in the documents while registration. The government plans to implement the procedure in Kerala within a month, he said.

Handloom tourism village project launched

In an effort to revive the State's handloom industry, Kerala tourism has launched a unique ‘handloom village project’. The project is aimed at promoting rural tourism by supporting on the lives of traditional weavers. A handloom facilitation centre at Villikulam near Balaramapuram, Thiruvananthapuram was inaugurated by Tourism Minister and as a part of the programme weavers will be able to sell their products to external markets through government approved agencies. This would enable them to earn reasonable profits which is otherwise being taken away by the middleman.

Mullaperiyar dam on alert as water level rises

Following heavy rains that has risen the water level at the Mullaperiyar dam, alert has been sounded to the people living at the surrounding areas of Periyar river. The water level of the dam has risen to 134.2 ft and any further increase in the levels would mean releasing of water into the Periyar river. Popular Malayalam singer and music director, M G Radhakrishnan will be performing at a musical programme in Dubai which is scheduled to be held at the Indian consulate hall on Nov 11th. The musical extravagenza would also include noted singers like Venugopal, Radhika Tilak, Ravishankar, Unni Bhaskar etc. The musical evening would mainly comprise of songs composed by Radhakrishnan himself and would focus only on songs.

Kerala tourism gets back to swing

After the recent Chikangunya scare, Kerala is witnessing a comeback in its tourist inflow to the State. Besides the new tourist season has started and most of the hotels are said to have completely booked for the season. This first batch of nearly 300 foreign tourists from UK has already flown down to Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday and more are expected in the coming weeks. The tourists were even given a traditional welcome and most of them are looking forward to enjoy the pleasant weather coupled with the exotic natural beauty and cuisine that the God's Own Country has got to offer. In fact Kumarakom, Kochi and Munnar seems to be the most favored destinations to the tourists.

Kalyanachamayam

Kalyanachamayam is directed by debutant Satish. The film is jointly produced by Dr Thomas Kurien, Sisily and Biju Kaiparedan under the banner of Isabella Creations. Jayasurya plays the male lead in the film. The film tells a Christian family story and has Jagathy Sreekumar, Harishree Ashokan etc. The film is said to have 2 heroines. The film has already been launched and shooting will start shortly in Mundakayam.

Air Arabia starts Tvm-Sharjah flights

Middle East's low cost airliner, Air Arabia is adding Thiruvanananthapuram to its Indian cities destinations. Air Arabia presently operates to Kochi and will launch its daily Tvm services on Nov 5th. Flights to Thiruvananthapuram will take off from Sharjah at 0645 hours, and will reach TVm at 1220 hours. The return flights will depart Thiruvananthapuram at 1305 hours, reaching Sharjah at 1555 hours (local time).

Buses starts services partially

The indefinite strike by bus and truck operators in Kerala has entered the fifth day on friday. However few private bus owners has withdrawn from the strike and has started with services including Thiruvanathapuram, Thrissur, Eranakulam districts. Meanwhile Transport Minister has said that necessary actions were taken and alternate vehicles were in operation to face the ongoing strike across the state.

5 Malayalam films to feature in IFFI 2006

5 Malayalam films has been selected to be featured in this years' film festival at Goa. The Malayalam films that has found a place in the list are Blessy's Thanmatra, Sashi Paravoor's Nottam, Dhrishtantham. Others include debutant director Madhu Kaithapram's Ekantham and another debutant Dr. Biju Kumar's 'Saira' featuring Navya Nair. The 37th International film festival of India (IFFI) 2006 is scheduled from Nov 23-Dec 3rd. The festival will also feature a retrospective on late Malayalam filmmaker G Aravindan.

PM impressed by Kerala's tourism growth

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed happiness over the way Kerala's tourism economy was growing and assured that the Center would provide all support for infrastructure development of airports in Kerala. "I am very happy that apart from the outward migration of people, today Kerala's improved connectivity is encouraging tourism into the state. 'Gods Own Country' has become a magnet for seekers of peace, relaxation and rejuvenation. I compliment the government and the state's very enterprising people for the manner in which they have developed Kerala's tourism economy," said Mr Singh who was in Thiruvananthapuram on the occassion of the Kerala Jubilee celebrations.
