Censor board axe on Kilukkam Kilukilukkam

Sandhya Mohan’s Kilukkam Kilukilukkam which was due for release last week had a last minute setback with the regional censor board denying a censor certificate to the film. Censor board refused to approve with a scene that involved the usage of a horse in the film. As per the rules of PETA, (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals), the usage of animals for entertainment without permission is barred and hence any film scenes involving animals need to get prior approval of PETA in order to get a clean chit from the censor board. Now the crew of Kilukkam Kilukilukkam team needs to go through this hurdle before getting the film ready for release. The film which stars Jayasurya, Kunchakko Boban, Kavya Madhavn is an extension of Priyadarshan’s hit film, Kilukkam. The film also has Mohanlal making a special appearance in the film.

State to seek legal opinion on Mullapperiyar case

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the govt would seek legal opinion on the SC verdict on the Mullapariyar case. Supreme Court had asked the state to increase the water levels of the 110 year old dam from 136 feet to 142 feet. However the government said it would study the verdict in detail and would not change its stand as it would jeopardize the safety of the people. A legal opinion on this regard will be sought and proper measures will be taken after assessing the dam's safety.

Out of Syllabus is an offering from the Malayalam TV channel Kairali TV’s program producer Viswanathan. The movie though a campus story tells a very different and realistic story unlike the usual campus movies. The movie taken on a low budget justifies with a cast mostly new comers. Cast include S5 music band lead, Arjun Shashi, T V anchor Parvathy, Jayakrishnan, Praseedha, Nisha, Senthil, Riyas etc. The scenes mainly shot at the Chittoor college campus are picturised well. Storyline is by IPS officer, Sreejith who gives one a blissful and nostalgic ride to the old campus memories. The film is a mix of emotions that is themed with love, nostalgia and separation in the campus atmosphere. The film has few melodious songs.

DIC(K) partymen returning to Congress,claims KPCC

Kerala Congress president Ramesh Chennithala asserted that those partymen who had left Congress to join the Karunakaran party(DIC-K) were finally returning to the parent party. He also said that all those who will return will be provided room in Congress with due respect and it was left to Karunakaran to take a decision on this regard. With CPM showing no interest in any alliance with DIC-K, many of the Karunakaran supporters are signaling for return to the Congress origin.

April 6th India-Eng ODI at Kochi to be day match

The cricket one dayer match that is planned at Kochi in the India's upcoming series against England which is scheduled for April 6th at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi has been announced as a day match by the BCCI. The decision came in view with the Kerala Cricket Association’s plans for suggesting it to be day-night match. However the BCCI sticked on its decision on the day match saying that the lighting arrangements at present was not enough for a day-night match.

Mammootty who is running high with the recent runaway hit, 'Rajamanikyam' has another new film due for release, Balram Vs Tharadas in March. His next project is Johnny Antony's Thuruppugulan which is readying for Vishu Release. The shooting of the film is underway in Kochi. The name of the movie seems to be apt for the story. The film will portray the superstar in a very different role, who enacts the role of a card player who runs a roadside 'thattukada' or a small fast-food eatery shop. Sneha plays the heroine for the film.

Kerala MPs complainted that Kerala was neglected this time too with the Rail budget announcements providing no benefits to the Southern state. "This is not a new thing. “The railway ministers, no matter which party is in power, have been neglecting Kerala," said an MP of CPI-M. MPs claimed it as a ‘Bihar and Chennai-centric budget’. 3 new trains that will benefit Kerala was announced by the Union Railway Minister. A Chennai-Mangalore (a tri-weekly service that will pass through the state), Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram (a daily service) and Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram (a weekly service). He included a proposal to extend the Thiruvananthapuram-Jodhpur train to Bikaner in the new budget. He also had a proposal to increase the frequency of the Bangalore-Ernakulam Express from weekly to bi-weekly. Meanwhile Vayalar Ravi said that the Kerala MPs would ask the railway minister to announce more trains for the state.

The much talked big budget movie of Mammootty, Balram vs Tharadas is slated for release on March 16th. Mohanlal film ‘Vadakkum Nathan’ is also expected to hit the theaters soon though the dates are not yet finalised on this. But Kalabhavan Mani’s ‘Ravanan’ will be the first to reach the theaters on March 2nd. Suresh Gopi’s film on murder mystery, ‘Chindamani Kola Case’, Dileep’s ‘Pachakuthira’ and Jayaram’s ‘Maduchandralekha’ are other major projects headed for release in March.

Kerala to press Center for budget airline

The state government is going forward with its proposal on its budget airline, Air Kerala which is yet to get the nod from the Center. The government is set to press the Centre to get clearance for ‘Air Kerala’, which is supposed to provide airline services to the Gulf countries at a nominal cost. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that he would go with the States proposal and seek Center’s approval for the project. He also said that as a non profitable project the Center should not impose constraints applied to the private airlines in the overseas sector.

Kerala Tourism sector to provide major job opportunities

Compared to the earlier years, Kerala has witnessed 17.28% rise in the international tourists which is expected to further rise in the coming years. The Government expects over 8 lakh tourists this year and mega plans are underway to improve the surge in the tourists’ inflow which would also bring in major job oppurtunities to the state. Projects in Medical Tourism, Vazhiyoram projects, Ente Grama Vikasanam, Ente Gramam Tourism Sauhrida Gram are some of them. Other initiatives from the govt include Rs 551 lakh project for the renewal works of Elephant Park at Punnathur Kotta, near Guruvayur, setting up ayurvedic resort and herbal garden at Vagamon, International Hospitality Management Institute at Alappuzha and Holistic Health Care Resort and Spice garden at Nelliyampathy. Studies indicate that the tourism industry would provide 2,221,370 job opportunities in the state by 2013, said Tourism Minister Venugopal.

Second Edusat-based education channel soon

Under the VICTERS programme, the Kerala government's Education Department has announced the launch of a second Edusat-based education channel which will soon be available in the State. Though the Channel is already on the air with telecast trials, it is awaiting Prime Minister's response for an official inauguration of the channel which is to become a comprehensive education channel by June.The Education dept says it will connect all the Government schools in the State with the EDUSAT facility through a receive-only terminal (ROT) by March 31st. The facility could be also made available in homes through cable television. The present VICTERS channel has been found very effective in conducting programmes such as teacher-training, literacy programmes and career guidance sessions.

111th annual Maramon Convention begins

We are ready for probe in all cases: Achuthanandan

Following the recent CAG report tabled in the Assembly, CPI(M) party leader V.S. Achuthanandan said that his party was ready to face any impartial inquiry in bringing out the truth in all the cases of abnormalities disclosed in the report. "If the Government has any pride, it should make an earnest attempt to bring out the truth in these cases," he said. He also alleged that the UDF Government has shown undue rush in tabling the report, while the same was not evident in the case of the other reports.

With the Kerala government proposing 2006-07 as the ‘Year of Medical tourism’, major plans are underway to promote health tourism in the state. The government is making initiative to connect major hospitals in the state. As a part of this, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) had signed an agreement with Amrita India Institute of Medical Sciences for incorporating the medical tourism. The government is also adopting measures to enforce stringent quality standards for the ayurvedic resorts in the state. Licenses for these health resorts and spas are issued only after ensuring that they maintain quality standard which is assessed by a specialist team of ayurveda experts, tour operators and other officials.

Jesudas to write story for Malayalam movie

The movie titled Koormam, will talk about the social and political issues of Kerala illustrated through the eyes of King Mahabali. “It will be a collection of several thoughts and dreams that I have about Kerala," said Jesudas who announced the launch of the movie. Besides writing story, Jesudas will also be lending music for the film. The movie produced under the banner of Koral Combines, will have its shooting at Ernakulam, Palakkad and Tamil Nadu. K. R. CAG finds lapses in Canadian deal with Lavalin

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has indicated in its report that there lapses found in the deal signed with the Candian firm, SNC Lavalin for the renewal and modernization of the Pallivasal, Sengulam and Panniar hydroelectric projects in 1996. The report indicts the then state power minister under the CPM government in the involvement over the controversial deal. The report says that the spending of Rs.374.50 crores over the project, had not yielded appropriate gains and blamed that the projects were conducted without proper feasibility studies.

Tax free budget with sops for govt. staff and poor

The Kerala Budget presented by Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman on Friday, contained many proposals for the government employees, farmers and the poorer sections of the society. This included providing long overdue pay revision for the Government employees, pension for farmers above 60 years with no other income and initiatives for the poor, tribals and the fishing community. No new taxes were imposed in the budget for the year 2006-07, which showed an overall deficit of Rs 771.83 crore. But certain changes will be applied to clear the loss of revenue due to the implementation of VAT and to stabilize the system.

EC in favour of simultaneous Assembly polls

With the Assembly terms nearing expiration Kerala is likely to witness simultaneous Assembly polls along with 3 other states West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu. Chief Election Commissioner B.B.Tandon indicated that he is in favour of holding parallel elections. However a final decision on this will come later after assessment of the situations. There is also a suggestion put forward by the Chief Minister, Chandy that the elections be conducted in two phases. This time photo affixed electoral lists will be used; the revised electoral rolls would be published soon.

Keralites have higher life expectancy,says report

The state's latest Economic Review of 2005 points out some interesting facts on the Kerala’s health scenario. The state continues to lead in the birth rate, infant mortality and life expectancy as against to the rest of India. The birth rate indicates 16.70 per 1,000 population in Kerala as against to the national rate of 24.80. Death rate for the state stands at 6.30 as compared to the entire India at 8.00. Infant mortality is surprisingly low at 11 in the state while compared to the national average of 60. Similarly life expectancy for Keralites is much higher than other Indians. For whole of India, it is 64.10 for men and 65.80 for women. For Kerala men it is 71.67 years and for Kerala women its 75 years. However the report also indicated that 9% of Kerala’s 32 million population were above 60. Another fact is 22.10% households of Kerala are headed by women, as against 10.30 for entire India.

Shooting of Thuruppugulan is progressing at Kochi. In the new year also, Mammootty intends to continue his winning streak through Thuruppugulan. Mammootty and Sneha were present at Kalamassery near FACT for certan scenes of Thuruppugulan. Lots of School children were also present to see the shooting. Johny Antony, the hit producer and the director Milan Jaleel are coming together for the first time in Thuruppugulan. It is an action comedy film scheduled to be released during the coming Visu. THe movie is an entertainer to match the festival mood of Vishu. The director is trying to use Mammootty to the maximum with action, comedy and sentiments all mixed in 'Thuruppugulan'. State film awards for Thanmatra, Mohanlal, Navya

Blessy's Thanmathra excelled in this years Kerala state film awards winning the major awards including Best Film and best director. Mohanlal won the best actor award for his role in the film while Blessy won the award for direction and screenplay. Navya Nair is the best actress for her performance in 'Saira' and `Kanna Madanguka.' Bhavana made it to the second best actress (Film: Daivanamathil). Salim Kumar is the second best actor and Lal Jose second best director(Achan Urangatha Veedu).Achuvinte Amma was declared the best popular film and Roshan Andrews won the best debut director(Udayannanu tharam). Ananthabhadram bagged several awards including best cinematographer(Santhosh Shivan), best music director(M G Radhakrishnan),best editing (Sreekar Prasad), art direction (Sunil Babu) and make-up (Pattanam Rasheed). Universities ask for greater autonomy

The global education meet at Kochi called the state government for greater level of autonomy to the educational institutions in the State. The Universities has demanded for greater autonomy in the academic, administrative and financial levels to universities and their affiliated colleges. The Vice Chancellors of Kannur, Calicut, Mahatma Gandhi, Kalady Sanskrit University and Cochin University of Science and Technology met during the meet and also decided to set up a ‘Consortium of Universities in Kerala' that would authorize them to make decisions on issues common to all universities.

Pravasi centres for NRIs to be set up in embassies

The Center government has taken an effort to set up Pravasi centres at embassies under the Department of Overseas Indian Affairs inorder to attend to the issues concerning NRIs in the expatriate country. This was informed by the new Overseas Indian Affairs minister, Vayalar Ravi.These Centers will be soon opened attached to the Indian embassies and would focus on issues related to violation of labour laws and would address problems faced by the NRIs. The department also has plans to to amend the emigration laws to overcome the recruitment rackets and make it more beneficial to those working especially in the Gulf countries.

Pachakuthira directed by Kamal will have popular star Dileep once again playing double role for a film. Ealier Dileep played dual role for the hit film, Kunji Koonan. Dileep enacts the role of two brothers, one a junior artist supplier the other an NRI. Gopika plays the heroine for the film. Other casts include Salim Kumar, Siddique, Indrans, Mamookoya, Machan Varghese etc. Renowned music director Ilayaraja composes music for a Kamal film for the first time. Girish Puthencherry is the lyricist.T A Shahid is the script writer.The film is produced by Babu Shahir under the banner of Majestic Cinema. Alvin Film Company and Triveni movies are the distributors for the film. The shooting of the film is underway at Kochi and premises.

Kristal Group launching apartment project in Kerala

Kristal Group has joined with the Singapore based industrial land developer Jurong International as part of a consortium called the Kristal Holdings International Ltd. along with other Indian patners- the Innovative Film city from Bangalore and the Kunnel Group from Kerala. “To meet the anticipated demand for quality housing, estimated to be around 100,000 units in the next couple of years, Kristal Group would be offering state-of-the-art villas, commercial complexes, IT towers, resorts and clubs,'' CEO of the Kristal Group announced in a press release.

Renjith to script for Joshi- Mammootty film

Popular director com script writer Renjith will be penning the script for the Joshi film which will star Mammootty in the lead role. The Joshi-Mammootty duo had delivered many hits like New Delhi, Nair Saab etc is teaming up after many years. They last flick together was 'Dubai'. The new Joshi film yet untitled will be produced by a Gulf NRI, M Rajan under the banner of Horizon Entertainment.

International Education Meet takes off at Kochi

Amid wide protests from social and youth activists, the four day global education event, International Education Meet (IEM) took off at Kochi with Kerala Governor R.L. Bhatia inaugurating the event. The meet is being participated by many educational experts from as many as 21 countries and 28 universities along with 1,000 delegates from India and overseas. The event aimed at improving the quality of higher education through student exchange programmes with foreign varsities was seen by the Left protestors as the Government's move to open up higher education sector in the State to foreign investors.

Keerthi Chakra

Keerthi Chakra is a big budget movie in the making directed by Ravi Major who has also written the story for the film. The movie will have superstar Mohanlal playing the lead role of a military official, Major Javed Hussain. P.L. Thenappan is producing the film which is scheduled to start shooting in Kashmir and Kargil by March. Mamta Mohandas and Gopika will play the lead heroines for the film. Innocent, Jeeva, Kalabhavan Mani, Biju Menon, Jagathy Sreekumar are the other casts for Keerti Chakra.

Govt seek fresh polls at Palakkad council

The State Government filed a statement before the divison bench of the High Court saying that the Palakkad Muncipal Council crisis could be resolved only by completley dissolving the Council and conducting fresh polls to the council. The Govt stated that it was difficult to implement the activities of the urban body unless the chairperson was elected and appealed to hold fresh elections. Earlier the State Election Commission had stated that it was taking steps to hold byelections for filling up two casual vacancies in the two wards of the Palakkad Muncipality.

Lanka directed by A.K. Sajan tells an aggressive love story with Suresh Gopi playing the hero of the film. Mamta plays the heroine. Other casts are Subair, Raveendran, TP Madhavan, Manuraj, Sargo Vijayan, Akhila, Archana, Niranjana, Helen. Santhosh Damodaran is the producer of the film. The film is the first from the Malayalam film industry to be shot completely in Sri Lanka. B R Prasad is the lyricist. Sreenivas & Rajesh Jayamohan composes the music for Lanka. Lanka will see Suresh Gopi in a very different character of an Indian navy Captain in a somewhat negative role of a womaniser.

Ananthabhadram bags major Kerala Film Critics awards

Director Santosh Sivan's first Malayalam film, Ananthabhadram wins most of the awards including the best fim and best director award given by the Kerala Film Critics Association which will be now newly known as the Atlas Film Critics Awards. . Manoj K Jayan won the best actor award along with Dileep. Manoj was honoured for his role in Ananthabhadram while Dileep made it for the film, Chandupottu. Kavya Madhavan won the best actress award for her roles in Ananthabhadram and Sheelabathi. Mohanlal was acknowledged the most popular actor for his roles in Thanmatra & Naran. Veteran actor Thilakan was awarded Chalachithra Ratna award for his contribution to Malayalam film industry. Lal& Shobha Mohan won second best actor(Thommanum Makualam, Bunglavil Oudha) and actress (Chaandupottu) respectively. M G. Sreekumar is the best male playback singer (Bhalyam, Mayookam) while Sujatha the best female playback singer(Paranju Theeratha Vishesagal).

Emirates start flights to Kerala, tourists inflow to rise

The Dubai government owned Emirates Airlines, has launched its direct flight services connecting Dubai and the Thiruvananthapuram international airport. Emirates will have 8 flights weekly that will be operated using the Airbus A330-200 aircrafts. "This new service will connect to 13 destinations in the Middle-East through 140 flights per week from the airline's hub in Dubai." said Emirates Airlines chairman. He also said that the airline would focus on promoting Kerala's tourism sector especially on holiday and medical tourism which would witness a surge in its number of tourists to Kerala. The Emirates Holidays, the tour operators in the Gulf and Middle East region would also be promoting Kerala's major places of tourist interests.

International status for Kozhikode airport

The Kozhikode Airport at Karippur in Kerala has been given the international status. In addition to Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, this is third airport in the state to get an international status. The decision to to upgrade the Kozhikode airport to international status was taken by a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Though Kozhikode was operating many international flight services, the new status would help bring more benefits to the airport in terms of security and infrastructure facilities.

Lion makes grand opening

Dileep starrer Lion directed by Joshi which made an appearance after a long wait also turned out to be this year's first release in the Malayalam movies. Its been worth the wait with the movie making a grand opening in 48 theaters across Kerala. Most of the theaters recorded an exceptional opening. The delay of other big movies also contributed in Lion’s favor. The lucky pair Dileep- Kavya stars in this movie along with Jagathy, Innocent, Cochin Haneefa, Salim Kumar and Harisree Ashokan. Though a low budget film, this political mass entertainer has got all the right ingredients to make it a hit.
