New varieties of fishes found at Kerala coastline

New varieties of fishes are being found at Kerala coastline. The new varieties found are Puffer fish and Squids. Seafood exporters and fishermen say that the presences of new variety of fish are after the tsunami struck Kerala coast in December 2004. Scientific community says that studies have to be conducted to find the reason for increase in the population of Puffer fish. Puffer fish are not new to Kerala coast as per the scientific community. Puffer fish destroys the fishing nets and adding to the fishermen's woes, also destroy other fish varieties caught in the net. The fisherman in the western coast found large squids.

Take1 is a new film magazine from CPI for Kerala NRI’s. Take 1 will be edited in Cochin and will be designed and printed in Dubai. Nadeem Hood, Associate Publisher, said “Keralites make up the largest percentage of UAE’s - and perhaps even the GCC’s - expatriate community and we felt that there was a need to provide them with a high-quality film and culture magazine.” Dominic De Sousa publisher and owner of CPI said, “For all of us, community is important. Shared culture, shared dreams, shared history, and shared emotions. Kerala Police has started round-the-clock vigil at all the important airports, railway, bus stations, religious places and the National highways in view of the alert. Additional police force dog and bomb squads are also asked to ready for any emergency. Public has been advised to report the police any abandoned bags/parcels and movements of any suspicious characters.

Malayalees also figures in Delhi blasts victims

Malayalee also figures in New Delhi serial blasts victim. The victims are N Sivaraman (59) Northern Railways employee, his wife Meena (49) and their two sons Vinod (29), Vineet (24). While Vineet, a business management student was struggling for life at New Delhi's Rammanohar Lohia Hospital with 50 per cent burns. All the other three died in the blast. All the family member had gone to the market to buy baby wares for the 17-day-old child of Vinod. The family was to travel to Kerala for the customary ceremony for the newborn.

The music of Santosh Sivan’s Ananthabhadram is rocking the charts even before the release of the film. Ananthabhadram is a dark psychological thriller with great music by M.G.Radhakrishnan. All the songs are melodious and have the Malayalee touch. Songs like Thiranurayum… sung by Yesudas, Malamalayoola… by Kalabhavan Mani and the Pinakkamano…. sung by M.G.Sreekumar and Manjari picturised using Ravi Varma painting motifs are the pick of the album. lot is riding on Ananthabhadram as it is a film without superstars produced by the team of Manian Pilla Raju, Ajaychandran Nair and Raghuchandran Nair. This racy thriller is also going to make a star out of Manoj.K.Jayan who plays the scheming and evil back magician and is said to be terrific. The film releases on November 4 for Ramzan and is touted to be the dark horse.

Mammootty’s film ‘Rajamanickam’ stand out tall even before it is released. It is already a hot thing in the trade. And the theatres are willing to pay huge advance to producers Valiyaveetil Films and the distributors for the film. Mammootty’s role as a baffalo dealer, who is speaking Trivandrum dialect would hit off with his fans very well. There is also abuzz with the news that Valiyaveetil Films have already collected Rs.2 crores from theatre advance itself. This would ensure the film to become a super hit. English Medium remade in Tamil

Air India launches special packages

The national carrier Air India has announced a low budget special package to various destinations in Europe. This includes travel to US and UK and the package would be available upto March 31. The package including return ticket has a validity of one year. Rs. 18,990 would be charged to London, Paris and Frankfurt and Rs. 37,990 to New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. The facility would be available at airports in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Kolkata, Lucknow and Goa.

SBT increases interest rates for NRI deposits

The State Bank of Travancore (SBT) has announced an increase in interest rates for NRE deposits. The new interest rate for NRE savings bank accounts is 4.20 %. For NRE term deposits of one year to less than two years the interest rate will be 4.90 %, for two years to less than three years 5% and for deposits for three years and above up to five years the rate is 5.10 %. For deposits in US dollars for one year to less than two years the rate is 4.19 %, for two years to less than three years 4.29%, three years to less than four years 4.32 %, four years to less than five years 4.34 % and 4.37% for five years. For deposits in Pound Sterling the rates are 4.29%, 4.33%, 4.51%, 4.53%, 4.55% respectively. And for deposits in Euro the rates are 2.11%, 2.38%, 2.40%, 2.56% and 2.61% respectively.

Ban on fake visa holders

The Government of United Arab Emirates would issue an employment ban on job seekers holding fake visas. Even if the visa is found fake after the expiry of the visa punitive action will be taken. The Government has also informed that if an employee comes to know that the company is fake, he can contact the authorities for sponsorship change. Revealing the new decisions, Mr. Humaid bin Dimas, Assistant Under Secretary for Financial and Administrative Affairs, said that the existing laws has limitations to prevent the unauthorised sale of job visas to expatriates. The new laws are mooted jointly by the Resident and finance departments.

International Boat Show draws large crowds to Kochi

The third edition of the India International Boat Show, which was held recently in Kochi once again proved that the event is a much sought after one among the stake holders in the boating and leisure sports industry. Organized by Kerala Tourism, in association with India Tourism and the India Trade Promotion Organization, New Delhi, the show turned out to be an ideal business platform in the fast growing leisure boating and marine industry.

The three-day event had 66 exhibitors representing the crème de la crème of the boating and marine industry from across the world showcasing products and services to buyers from various fields including corporate giants and Government departments. Officials of the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and several police departments in India visited the Show. Around 4000 visitors from India, South Asian countries and some other nations made the show abuzz with activity. The 2,000 trade visitors generated an estimated US$ 15 million of trade enquiries, a fact that was endorsed by numerous exhibitors who were elated by the increasing business done at the show.

Several mainstream international players in the field including Sea Ray & Azimut (through Singapore-based Simpson Marine); Fairline Boats & Austal through direct representation and Ferretti, Sun Seeker, Princess, Carver, Zodiac, Horizon (all with local dealers and visits from the builders) participated in the Show. The leading players also reported their satisfaction at the quality of visitors.

AIE introduces 4 weekly flights from Kozhikode to Sharjah

The Air India Express (AIE) would introduce four weekly flights in the Kozhikode- Sharjah route, said Mr. V. Thulasidas, Chairman and Managing Director of Air India. Incidentally, the new decision comes on the occasion of the completion of five months of the budget service of the national carrier. The flights will be available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Revealing the future plans of the AIE, Mr. Thulasidas said that more services would be operated to the Gulf sector soon. For this four more aircrafts would be leased in 2006. 18 of the 68 Boeing 737- 800 aircrafts to be purchased by Air India as part of the modernisation programme would be used for AIE services. Air India flights currently operated to the Gulf sector would also be replaced by new aircrafts. Freighter services would be introduced in the sector soon. Air India also has plans to introduce service in the Thiruvananthapur! am- Frankfurt route, once the modernisation programme is complete. Frankfurt would be the hub for Air India’s future operations to various destinations in the US. Mr. Thulasidas also said that Air India flights to Riyadh and Dammam would be retained.

UAE allows expatriate workers job change

In a landmark decision, the Labour and Social Welfare department of the United Arab Emirates would allow expatriate workers to change jobs without the sponsor’s permission according to six conditions. As per these, expatriate workers who are denied salary for a period of three months would be allowed to change jobs. But the Government would issue permission for this only after an enquiry. In a labour dispute case, if an employee secures a favourable order from a Court he may be permitted to change his job. If a company is closed after the employer’s death or if the company’s ownership is transferred or in case of merger of companies, the employee can apply for a job change with necessary proof. Employees of companies that are closed down after an order of the Court or Government would also be permitted to change their jobs. On the recommendation of the related Government department, t! he Minister can also grant permission for job change. In such cases the new employer will have to pay an additional 3,000 Dirhmas if the employee lacks authorised work experience, according to the new law.

Air India Express expands operations to Dubai

The Air India Express (AIE) would operate services to the Dubai sector, said Mr. V. Thulasidas, Chairman and Managing Director of Air India. He was delivering the keynote address at the annual conference of the Trivandrum Management Association in Thiruvananthapuram recently. A dedicated freight service would also be introduced in the route. Despite many challenges like poor aviation infrastructure, Air India has successfully increased capacity in many routes, Mr. Thulasidas said. A proposal to increase the number of budget services to various destinations in the Gulf from all the three airports in the State is under serious consideration. Mr. Thulasidas also opined that the engineering maintenance base proposed at the Thiruvananthapuram airport, would also have facilities for the maintenance of Boeing fleet.

Kerala Kaumudi Flash will be launched on Nov 1

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar will launch Kerala Kaumudi Flash a Malayalam newspaper from the Kerala Kaumudi group on Nov 1. Kerala Kaumudi Flash will be a 12-page colour tabloid mid-day newspaper published at Thiruvananthapuram. Film actor Mohanlal will receive the first copy and actor Mammootty will release a special supplement. In future there are plan to start publishing Kerala Kaumudi Flash from other parts of the state.

Animal Husbandry Dept. alerts against Bird Flu

Animal Husbandry Department has alerted against the Bird Flu caused by the H5N1 strain of the avian influenza virus. The alert is sounded, as Kerala is the home of migratory birds, which can spread the disease. ," Dr K Udayavarman, additional director of the department, told reporters "All our offices have been alerted to send samples of dead birds and fresh droppings." The destinations of migratory birds in the state are Aakulam, Veli, Vembanad Lake, Sasthamkotta, Kandachira, Ashtamudi, Thattekkad bird sanctuary in Ernakulam, Purathur in Malappuram, Kadalundi in Kozhikode, Kattampalli and Madakkara in Kannur.

Kerala Airlines would attract NRI investments

The proposed "Kerala Airlines" - low cost International airlines to be registered as a Public Limited Company will attract Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) investments. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy informed that the Public Limited Company, which will be floated, would have 26 per cent of the total equity of Kerala Government and Cochin International Airport would have. CM added "The balance 74 per cent of the equity is proposed to be issued to general public, mainly, the NRIs,". Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) Managing Director V J Kurian said, “Our idea is to attract 2.5 lakh shareholders in the first phase. The ultimate target is one crore shareholders. We can issue discount coupons equivalent to the shares to the shareholders. So we can attract the NRI shareholders and ensure a captive passenger list also. A low-cost airlines will be viable only if we can ensure 80 per cent occupancy.”

Gulf airlines traffic increas due to tourist season

Gulf airlines attracts tourist with special packages. Air traffic increases during the peak tourist season, which begins from October and extends till March. Number of foreign tourists arriving in Kerala was up from 210,000 in 2000 to 345,000 in the last calendar year. M A Altaf, district manager of Oman Air, the national carrier of Sultanate of Oman said “All the Gulf airlines have good connection with Europe. We have seen a 20% increase in the traffic from these countries to Kerala during the tourist season.” Oommen Mathew, manger of Kuwait Airways said, “Over the years, our flights coming in from Europe have been registering a 15% growth in traffic and the load factor goes up from 60% to as high as 90%.” Jayaprakash Nair Qatar Airways official said “Increased daily seats available would be available from our new winter schedule beginning November 1. Under this schedule, all the 12 flights per week would have 250 seats each. This is meant for the tourists coming from Europe into Qatar and then into Kerala.”

CIAL to submit detailed report on Kerala Airways

Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) will submit detailed report including the number of airplanes and proposed routes to the State Government in the first week of November. British consultants Ernst and Young are preparing the report for CIAL. As per the proposal being prepared 74 percent shareholders will be from public and the State Government and the CIAL will hold 26 percent of the shares in the airlines. State government will forward the CIAL report to the Centre for further action.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy after visiting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his Race Course residence said informed that Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for the Rs 16 billion Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and also will inaugurate the Global Education Meet at Thiruvananthapuram during his visit. Iran’s Mahan Air will connect Tehran and Kochi

Iran’s private airlines Mahan Air based in Iran’s Kerman town will connect Tehran to Kochi. The flight will operate thrice a week and will commence in December 2005. V J Kurian, Chief of the Cochin Airport India Limited (CIAL) said, “To start with, they would operate three flights a week connecting Tehran and Kochi. Though the exact dates are to be announced, the commencement is fixed for December.” He added, “Today we have 15 airlines operating a record 204 weekly flights. Just six months ago, the number of flights every week was 170. In the past two months, three new private airlines have begun operations and more are in the pipeline.”

Government has recommended the name Palat Mohandas as Chief Information Commissioner. After the meeting of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy with Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan and Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman the name of Kerala Chief Secretary Palat Mohandas was finalised. Palat Mohandas will be retiring as the Kerala Chief Secretary by month-end. The name of former Accountant-General James K. Joseph and former Vigilance judge N. Vasu also came up for the post.

Both Kerala men and women won in their league match of the six-team south-zone senior Kabbadi tournament. 50 Vaidyaratnam outlets proposed in Karanataka

Thrissur based ayurvedic medicine producers Vaidhyaratnam will open 50 outlets in Karnataka by the year-end with an investment of Rs 15 crore. Prabodhachandran Nair announced Kalamandalam fellowship and awards for 2004 at a news conference at Cheruthuruthy on Wednesday in the presence of Vice-chairman Chowwallur Krishnan Kutty and secretary Balachandran Vadakkedath. Kerala High Court orders CBI inquiry into question paper leak. The case is presently being investigated by the Crime Branch. Justice A K Basheer allowing a writ petition by Karunaya Educational Trust of Kochi said that a "thorough and exhaustive" investigation has to be conducted in the case. The court directed Crime Branch to hand over all the related files to CBI within 10 days. It advised CBI to complete the investigation as expeditiously as possible, at any rate within three months from the date of assumption of charge of investigation. Kochi to host 'Food and Hotels India Show 2005'

Kochi in Kerala will host the 'Food and Hotels India Show 2005', an international event which would showcase the current trends in the hospitality industry. Around 200 stalls would come up at the Le Meridien International Convention Centre in Kochi. Over 1,000 delegates from the tourism and hospitality industry are expected to attend this mega event. The India Exhibition and Conference Service (IECS) in association with the Kerala Tourism and the Association of Approved and Classified Hotels (Kerala) organises the event, which will be held from November 15 to 17, 2005. Food safety, food hygiene, food processing, organic food, modern technologies and equipments include the different areas of focus, the organisers informed in a press conference in Kochi. Training programmes and competitions also form part of the programme. The organisers have made arrangements to carry out a very extensive buyer promotional campaign to attract large number of quality visitors. 'Culinary Challenge', the first of its kind conducted in the state is another speciality of the event. The event is organised in association with the Indian Federation of Culinary Association (IFCA), the main body representing the chefs in India. Culinary competitions will be conducted participating chefs from local resorts and restaurants. The judges for the competition will be appointed by the (IFCA). Technological workshops would also be organised with the participation of overseas guest speakers of international repute. The topics include 'Food and Beverage Hygiene', 'Bar Tending' and 'Sewerage Treatment and Waste Water Disposal'. She was speaking after inaugurating a handicrafts exhibition in New Delhi. Studies have shown that the living standards of artisans in some pockets of Rajasthan and Kerala have changed remarkably because of tourism. The children of the artisans now go to schools and families have all modern amenities. Tourists visiting India are fascinated with the creativity of the artisans here. Union Government to promote Health Tourism

A Task Force on Health Tourism constituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare would assess the opportunities for promoting India as a health destination, said Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare. He was addressing a conference on the topic 'Health Tourism – The Great Indian Advantage', organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce (ASSOCHAM). The task force would recommend actions to be taken by the Central and State Governments including super speciality medical care, outsourcing of medical services to Indian institutes and promotion of traditional medicines. The ministry of Health and Family Welfare in close coordination with the Ministry of Tourism is evolving strategies to give a strategic push to open the Indian Health Care Sector to foreign tourists, Dr. Ramadoss said. The advantage of India in medical tourism is comparative cost advantage. The minister opined that appropriate health packages for traditional therapies like Yoga, meditation, Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine would attract high end tourists from European and Middle East countries.

World tourism Day: Centre launches new initiatives

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the Ministry of Tourism has launched new initiatives to promote tourism including co-branding of 'Incredible India' with Air India, Microsoft, exclusive website on rural destinations and tourism taxis with 'Incredible India' graphitis.

Launching new schemes, the Union Minister of State for Tourism, Ms. Renuka Chowdhury said that she is hopeful of achieving five million tourist arrivals by the next year. This year till August, the arrival has recorded 15.6% increase. Encouraging trends are visible as a result of new initiatives in the field of rural tourism, medical tourism and cruise tourism. The ministry has decided to develop about a dozen destinations with concerted efforts and concentrated investment of Rs. 250 to Rs. 500 million each during the current financial year. An aggressive marketing scheme has also been planned for overseas marketing with focus on niche markets and youth. Unexplored markets like China will also be targeted, the minister said.

Centre asks States to identify new destinations

The Union ministry of Tourism has asked the States to identify ten new tourist destinations, which have not gained much popularity despite their tourism potential. These could be scenically beautiful sites or monuments or seasonal attractions like rare flowering of trees or blossoms. Locations for specific festivals could also be included. The Centre would provide all possible support for the development of the destinations, according to a communiqué from the Union ministry of Tourism.The Union Minister of State for Tourism, Ms. Renuka Chowdhury also informed that the State Governments have also been asked to constitute tourism police force and its deployment at all the important tourism destinations. She has also requested the States and tourism industry to run campaigns to create awareness among the masses for providing tourism friendly environment as tourism provides direct job opportunities at local level and better overall development of the region.

Nepal team studies Kerala Tourism's waste management programme

An official team from Nepal recently visited the State to study the Zero- waste project being carried out under the Kerala Tourism's initiative, participating local bodies and various stakeholders of the tourism industry. The delegation visited various centres related with the project and had a first- hand information on the project. Mr. Hari P. Rimal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Local Development, Nepal, who headed the delegation said that Nepal would include the zero- waste concept in its ongoing waste management programmes. Currently Nepal has undertaken the Strengthening of Environment Administration and Management at the local level (SEAM-N) with the help of Finland. The team would recommend to the Government of Nepal to include the Zero waste concept in the second phase of SEAM-N, said Mr. Rimal. Mr. Babu Ram Gautam, Under Secretary, Ministry of Local Government commented that the concept of generating bio- gas from garbage is ideal for Nepal. The team visited the Centre for Development Studies, Zero Waste Centre, Venganoor Grama Panchayat, Kovalam beach resort and Hotel Samudra.

Majestic water carnival draws thousands to Aranmula

Festival season, Onam is unarguably the ideal time to visit Kerala during when the culture and heritage of this land are showcased at its best. Boat races, a major highlight of the festival is certainly a must- see event. Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali, a distinguished one among them is a water regatta full of colour and enthusiasm. This year too the event drew thousands of viewers to Aranmula a tiny hamlet on the banks of the river Pamba where the magnificent pageantry unfolds. Held annually, the highlights of the event are ceremonial procession of Snake boats called Palliyodams here and boat races. The regatta, celebrated as a grand social event today, has a religious origin. The Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallom is also noted for the rituals and traditions associated with it. Before the grand procession, the snake boats assembled near the Sree Parthasarathy Temple. And witnessed by cheering crowds, the boats moved in pairs to full-throated singing and shouting. Mr. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Hon'ble Vice- President of India flagged off the pageantry of palliyodams. Around thirty- five palliyodams participated in this. This was followed by the boat race held in two batches. Edayaranmula palliyodam in the 'A' batch and Poovathoor East palliyodam in the 'B' batch bagged the Mannam Trophy for winners. Melukara and Poovathoor Padinharu won the second and third prizes in the 'A' batch. In the 'B' batch, Kadapra and Muthavazhi finished second and third respectively. The Cherukol palliyodam in the 'A' batch and Kadapra palliyodam in the 'B' batch won the R. Sanker Trophy for 'Best Performance and Decoration'. Mr. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Hon'ble Vice- President of India inaugurated the festival. Mr. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Minister for Water Resources, presided over the function. Mr. K. C. Travel Film Festival: Novel experience for movie buffs

Around twenty films were screened in the first Travel Film Festival organised jointly by the Kerala Tourism, Kerala Institute of Travel and Tourism Studies (KITTS), Chalachitra Academy and the Institute of Journalism. The festival had around twenty entries from different countries including Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Dubai, Nepal, and Israel. The Chief Minister, Mr. Oommen Chandy inaugurated the festival. Mr. K. C. Venugopal, Minister for Tourism, presided over the function. The winner of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the year 2004 and well- known Malayalam film director, Mr. Adoor Gopalakrishnan was felicitated during the festival. A seminar was also held on the topic 'Media and Tourism'.

Tourism drives State's economy, says Chief Minister

Kerala's economy is largely dependent on tourism and the sector provides jobs to around eight lakh people, said Mr. Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister. And tourism will be the State's new model of development. The Chief Minister commented that when destinations like Singapore are man- made, Kerala is god- made. Congress not to share power with BJP

KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala addressing newspersons after a meeting of the PCC office-bearers, Ministers and Parliamentary party leaders said that ''We will not share power with the BJP in any municipality or panchayat.'' He informed that even if the BJP voluntarily supported the Congress in places where there was no absolute majority, the party members would resign from the post.
