AJ: Former Chief Minister and Veteran Leader K.Karunakaran's plans to return to Congress crossed a major hurdle, party's Kerala leadership informing AICC President Sonia Gandhi that it was not opposed to his re-entry. State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala and Leader of Opposition in Assembly Oommen Chandy had a meeting with party chief Sonia Gandhi. We are not against anybody returning to the party. However, a decision in this regard has to be taken by Sonia Gandhi and the Congress high command," Chennithala told reporters after the meeting.
Karunakaran had left the party because of differences with Sonia Gandhi and the central leadership. So a decision on his re-entry has to be taken by the high command, he said, adding any decision in this regard was acceptable to the state unit.
Karunakaran, who left the Congress and formed the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) had later joined the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). He had recently written to Gandhi expressing his desire to return to the party fold.
