Flash Strike By Train Drivers Called Off

AJ: A flash strike by loco drivers in Railway divisions in Kerala which virtually halted train services for about eight hours since this afternoon was called off. Protests later in the day following talks between union representatives and railway officials. The unions launched the strike demanding withdrawal of the decision to increase the working hours of engine drivers under Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad divisions.
The unions agreed to ask the drivers to resume duties after Southern Railway authorities communicated their stand to state minister M Vijayakumar, who intervened in the matter as the lightning strike caused severe inconvenience to thousands of passengers. Also taking part in the talks was Basudeva Acharya, an MP from West Bengal and also a railways standing committee member,' said L. Mani, president of the All-India Loco Running Staff Association. Today detailed talks would take place and it was on this assurance that the strike was called off.
