Jaya Soorya's 'Uthara swayamvaram'

Ramakanth Sarju is directing the film `Uthara Swayamvaram'. The story moves around Prakash and Uthara. Prakash's father Sreedhara Menon runs a supermarket. He wanted Prakash to become an officer. But after graduation Prakash engaged in the activities of an Arts Club in the village. He neglected his father's wish and did not try for any job. He spared time to help other people in the village. He has an inclination for a girl in the village. Her name was Uthara, daughter of Mahadevan, who is very rich. Incidently Uthara fell into a well and Prakash saved her. There he committed that he will make Uthara his life partner. Only Prakash's sister and friends did know the relationship with Uthara. Meantime, Mahadevan fixed Uthara's marriage with the son of a rich fellow.

Jayasurya will be Prakash and Roma as Uthara. They are supported by Lalu Alex, Salim Kumar, Nedumudi Venu, Biju Kuttan, Balachandra Menon, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Shobha Mohan, Sukumari and others. Gireesh Puthencherry has penned the lyrics and M. Jaya Chandran has scored the music. Salu George will wield the camera. J.Pallaseri has wrought the screen play. Under the banner of Pavithram creations, Santhosh Pavithram is producing the film.

'Pallikoodam' begins

Court stays release of 'Kutty Srank'

The release of Shaji N.Karun's Mamootty film 'Kutty srank' has got stayed by Kollam sub court. The court allowed stay by accepting a petition filed by A.R. Chandrasekhara Kurup and other members of the Azhakathu family. The plaintiff claimed that screening of some scenes shot at the ancestral home, deities placed in the Kalari and Sarpakavu would hurt them. They pleaded that those scenes should be removed from the film. Considering the case judge E. Baiju pronounced the stay on the release of the film. Kuttisrank is the first Malayalam movie to be produced by Reliance Entertainment.

The Goethe Zentrum is launching a 'German Film Club' for film lovers in the city. The inaugural screening of the film will take place on Saturday. The first film to be screened will be 'I'am Juli', directed by Fatih Akin. Dubbed as a 'nomadic romantic comedy' the film revolves around a man who has never been luck in love but thinks his fortune may have changed, only to find his life more complicated. Part romantic and part road picture, the story is full of twists as it take the viewers on a journey through Europe, switching languages as from German, English, Bulgarian and Turkish. The film will be screened at Amphitheatre of Goethe Zentrum.

Permanent venue for Film Festival in Kerala

Culture minister M.A Baby said the state government is planning on a proposal to create a permanent facility for holding the annual International Film Festival of Kerala [IFFK]. He was replying to the question in the Assembly. The government has asked film maker Adoor Gopala Krishan to give his views on the issue and he had submitted the same. The government would decide on the matter after discussions on the proposals submitted by Adoor Gopala Krishnan. The goverment is also working on a proposal to set up an International film institute and video archive of Malayalam films.

The Kerala state Chalachitra academy had a DVD collection of 3,000 films. A scheme for screening one film every week would become operational by August. He said the government would also look into the members suggestion that sanction must be given to private agencies to construct multiplexes in the state with a five year tax holiday. The government could think of entering into agreements with multiplex owners for setting apart one of the cinemas for screening quality films. The proposal would have to be discussed with the revenue, tourism and finance ministers before a decision could be taken. He also promised to look into the plea for a hike in the subsidy of Rs. 4 lakhs being paid to Malayalam films made entirely in the state using the infrastructural facilities and equipment of Keral State Film Development Corporation.

Mammootty Inaugurates Heart Foundation

A charity foundation has started under the guidance of Mamootty named 'Care and Share International Foundation' for helping the poor children suffering from heart disease, based at Kochi. Children below 12 years of age from Kerala and Lakshadweep would get help from this scheme. In the first step hundred children would get benefit. For those who need surgery will be carried at Sree Chithira Thirunal hospital at Thiruvananthapuram, MIMS at Kozhikode and Amritha Institute at Eranakulam. The foundation has signed MoU with these Hospitals. As a start of this programme each hospital will carry surgery today (Thursday) for one child. Foundation would spare Rs. One lakh for each surgery. It will receive donations from interested persons to serve the purpose. The selection process of children will be done under the guidance of doctors from a panel. The foundation was inaugurated by Mamootty at Kumbala Ramada resort in Kochi on Wednesday. MACTA to disrupt shootings after July 10

MACTA Federation President Vinayan said that Federation members would strike work and not permit film shooting location after July 10. He was speaking in a press meet at Palakkad on Wednesday. He alleged a wing of the film field did not consider the cause which MACTA raised. They did not even took initiative to convene a meeting for discussion to solve the problem. Cine field workers extend helping hands to the grieved family of playwright and director Lohitha Das, who died on Sunday due to heart failure. Actors and technicians will jointly act for the purpose. Superstar Mammooty informed that he would bear the education expenses of Lohi's sons Harikrishnan and Vijayasanker. FEFKA will corodinate the efforts of other workers. It will help the family till both of them get job. Harikrishnan is studying for BBA at Coimbatore and Vijayasankar for Plus one at Edappalli IGM school. Lohi, now a memory

A.K. Lohitha Das, director, actor and screen play writer, who died on Sunday following a massive heart attack in Lisie hospital in Eranakulam, was cremated with state honours near his house, Amaravathy, an old mana [ancestral Namboothiri house] at Akaloor village on the banks of Nila (Bharathapuzha) at Lakkidi-Perur grama panchayat limits of Ottapaalam Taluk on Monday. He was 54 years old. People from all walks of life including artistes and other cine field members attended. He is survived by wife Sindhu and sons Hari Krishnan and Vijaya Sankar.
The initial period of A.K. Lohitha Das as a story writer was not successful. But he soon made his mark as a playwright. His debut play was staged by KPAC. In 1987 he made his foray into the world of film by scripting the award winning screenplay for 'Thaniyaavarthanam', directed by Sibi Malayil.

The Sibi-Lohi duo turned out to be most successful combination, which led to many super hit films like 'Ezhuthappurangal' , 'Kireedam' , 'Mudra' , 'His Highness Abdulla' ,'Bharatham' and 'Kamaladhalam' . His screen plays for 'Aadhaaram' , 'Padheyam' , 'Amaram' , 'Venkalam' ,'Kanmadham' and 'Karunyam' were significant for their flawless characterisation and inimitable styles of narration.

His last film to be directed was 'Nivedyam', casting Bhama and Vinu Mohan. He was completing the script of 'Bheeshmar' to be directed by Sibi Malayil casting Mohan Lal as the hero. Manju Warrier, Meera Jasmine, Bhama and Vinu Mohan entered the cine field by acting in his films.

On Sunday the annual general body meeting of AMMA was under way at Ernakulam, when news about the writer's untimely demise trickled in. It passed a resolution condoling his death. Senior artistes and directors such as Mammootty, Mohan Lal, Dileep, Jayaram, Jagadheesh, Mukesh, Jagathy Sreekumar, Innocent, Shaji Kailas, Vinayan, Sibi Malayil, and Joshi besides Cultural Minister M.A Baby, Union minister of state for Agriculture K.V Thomas and District collector K.M. Beena paid tributes to the eminent writer when the body was kept at Maharaja's college pavilion at Ernakulam for public view.
