Govt to have no say in pvt. professional college admn

The Supreme Court of India issued a landmark judgement today regarding the admission criteria of professional private colleges and unaided and aided minority institutions in the country. A seven-judge Constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice R C Lahoti pronounced that the state governments will have no right to allot free merit seats or government qouta seats in these institutions. The court ruled that minority institutions, whether aided or non-aided, were free to admit students of their choice and students from other community could be admitted but not to such an extent so as to change the minority character. The court allowed private professional colleges to admit NRI students up to 15 per cent of total seats without giving merit a go-by. The judgement was welcomed by the managements while there was widespread criticism from the Left parties and student organisations. The CPM state secratary, Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan said, the new law will be against the interests of poor students, while SFI All India President, K. Ragesh said the judgement was very unfortunate.
