Tamilnadu CET in Kochi on August 28

The Common Entrance Test (CET) for admissions to undergraduate medical and para-medical courses in private medical colleges in Tamilnadu for the academic year 2005-’06 will be held on August 28. The CETs will be held at Chennai, Vellore, Tiruchy, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Coimbatore and Salem in Tamil Nadu, besides Kochi in Kerala and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, Ishari K Ganesh, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Private Professional Colleges Association-Health Sciences (TNPPCA-HS), told reporters. The CET will be held for 50 seats in PSG Medical College, Coimbatore, 410 seats in six dental colleges, 1,600 paramedical courses seats in 31 colleges, 1,800 BSc nursing seats in 35 colleges, 1,750 Physiotherapy seats in 35 colleges, 200 Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT) seats in four colleges, 350 seats in seven colleges for Homeopathy, 30 seats in one college for Siddha, 70 seats in two colleges for Ayurveda and 60 seats in 1 college for Naturopathy.The 50 percent of the total seats will come under management quota. Application forms and prospectus will be issued from August 1 in all the colleges. The cost of the application form is Rs 50. The exam fee is Rs 500 for general category and Rs 400 for SC/ST candidates. Applications can also be downloaded from the website www.tancohs.org. The last date for the receipt of application forms is August 18. The results of the CET will be published on September 14.

Root resorption related to Orthodontic treatment

In a recent study it was found that Root resorption can begin in the early leveling stages of orthodontic treatment. About 4.1% of patients studied had an average resorption of 1.5 mm or more of the 4 maxillary incisors, and about 15.5% had 1 or more maxillary incisors with resorption of 2.0 mm or more from 3 to 9 months after initiation of fixed appliance therapy. Although teeth with long, narrow, and deviated roots are at increased risk of resorption during this early stage, the explained variance of these risk factors is less than 25%.

Govt doctors to have reservation for P G courses

The Kerala government have decided to ensure that the qouta for government doctors in the Post Graduate courses in the Government Medical and Dental colleges to be restored. Cheif Minister Mr.Oommen Chandy was talking after laying foundation stone for the new OP block in the premises of General Hospital in Kochi. Though Government doctors enjoyed a quota in PG courses earlier, it was struck down by the Supreme Court sometime back, making the public sector less attractive to youngsters. The move by the government is to bring back the interest in young doctors to join the goverment sector. Cheif Ministeralso said revision of pay scales of Government doctors was being actively considered by the Pay Commission set up by the State. While stating that the Government would encourage hi-tech hospitals in the private sector, he said the Government hospitals would also be equipped with modern facilities to be on par with them.

Students of A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, a unit of the Nitte Education Trust, have bagged 11 ranks of the 13 ranks declared by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, in BDS and MDS examinations conducted in September 2004. Deepak Kalia and Rakshith Hegde have bagged the second and third ranks in the MDS examination. The BDS ranks holders are: Vimi S. first, Sampath second, Shennet Simon third, Salian Varsha fourth, Rao Anupama fifth, Sumitha H.R. and Anjali Shah both sixth, Avate Pooja seventh, Navya Ashok eighth, Smitha Anitha ninth and Aarathi S. 10th.

BDS entrance postponed

The entrance test for admission to BDS course at the Dr Harvansh Institute of Dental Sciences, Punjab University, scheduled for July 10 has been postponed. The postponement has been effected as a team from the Dental Council of India will inspect the college on July 15 before granting it affiliation.
